This video highlights the huge discrepancies between state schools, particulary 'grammar' schools and non selective 'comprehensives' .

The video demonstrates a school that is a totally calm and pleasant environment . A place where even a 'raised'voice by a pupil to teacher would be rebuffed as equally by fellow pupils as the member of staff.

This shows that it is not just academic standards that are 1000% better but behaviour, mutal respect and endorses the old saying.

My DC's non selective comprehensive is outstanding and rowdy behaviour in the classroom, has always been stamped out immediately.

A type of school that should be available for all parents and children who cannot afford £ 15,000 per year but would benefit from such a school. My three DDs have been/are fortunate to have been educated in similar schools.

It might be a public relations video, but a lot less editing is /was required than ' Grimethorpe Community' school's video !

Or are you, maybe, just speculating, based on nothing more concrete than, ooh, speculation?

The 'value' of the education recieved can be 1000% better or 10 times greater than 'percieved' value of the education recieved at the other school.

Also if the the local Comprehensive achieves 20% at GCSE and the grammar achieves 100% the grammar is 500% more successful at GCSE !

Oh dear the myth of the Grammar again. My parents attended Grammar schools and remain passionate opponents of the system as do many of their friends. They cannot accept that so many children were stigmatised at 11 by the results of a pretty arbitrary exam. They also dispute that the quality of their education was up to much compared with that which my siblings and I received in non selective schools. There is not just one story.

My ds' independent school had/has an almost identical video, all about how they are all one big family, everyone is inclusive and supportive, so many opportunities ... etc.

He's been there almost three years now, has been horribly bullied, regularly tells me of others being bullied both low grade and serious, there was a near riot in a classroom the other day because the teacher left the room and a couple of pupils took a dislike to each other. The pupils are the same as at any other secondary school - teenagers.

My other ds is at the local academy, which also has a similar PR video and is generally considered the best state school in the county. He and ds1 are in complete agreement that both school have exactly the same sort of problems and behaviours.

Any school can look good on a carefully choreographed and directed video, it means nothing.

Fwiw, both school's results are extremely good and on a par with one another, regardless of the fact that one is state and one is fee paying.

If the local Grammar SELECTS the top 5% of students who PASS the 11+ and a comprehensive take all student in it's catchment area regardless of ability or SEN it's grossly unfair to say one is 'better'

My daughter chose NOT to enter selective education and I let her because she wanted to go to our local school - and she's doing just brilliantly

A grammar school head teacher dies and meets St Peter. He says' its about 50:50 with you, go and see what hell has to offer first then see what you think.
She meets the devil's who says yeah have a look around. Inside all is order and discipline, no-one speaks without politeness and everything seems regimented. In many areas there seems to be discontent, but when she is shown in many former world leaders are engaged in passionate but civilised debate, and in the background heavily competitive, but well managed games are taking place, she recognises many champion sports people, and ponders on how many secretly took those performance enhancers after all.

She goes back to heaven, and looks around there too. Its OK. Very nice, and there's some harp.playing, but no-one seems to be actually engaging. Its like they are all on medication,however blissful they look, she just can't settle.

'Well' she says to St Peter. If it's all the same to you, I think I'll choose hell.

The next day she picks up her stuff and enters hell. The devil is no where to be seen and the order has turned to abuse. Glances and looks are punished by fire, tortured souls cry.out and limp around. The competitive sports have turned into all out war, and there is lots and lots of crying and name calling.

'What happened? She asks a passing adult, ' yesterday everything was wonderful'
'Oh yes, yesterday.. Yes they were filming the recruiting video yesterday'

Mind you I'm being cynical, but actually I agree. I went to a school with some absolute scum, a lot of council estate kids with varying values, and a few middle class and a few intelligent kids. It was a fucking nightmare. Even the teachers though intelligence was freaky and probably only there to humiliate them. I do wish I'd been around slightly more people like me. Though my cousin still didn't like his grammar, they realised he didn't and moved him. In our school they would have put him on meds

I know what school i'd rather my daughters attended. And it's not the first one.



So much good work is being done in state schools. Mine attend state schools and are confident, articulate and engaged with learning. Their school is multicultural- 70 languages spoken - and one of the best things had been the ways my children's horizons have been broadened by friendships with children from other cultural backgrounds.

My girls st primary school have been attending the university for science talks and benefiting from forest school, music lessons and mNy other opportunities.
