World book day - superheroes, disney princesses and film characters

We'll just start by me acknowledging that i know i abu!! I also know it has been done before, probably on this day last year and the year before that, and the year before that

But its annoying me, so there. It probably wouldnt bug me if only a few did it, but it seems to be nearly everyone

Its not an effort thing, the costumes i have used required zero effort, nor is it only cost when there are people in books who wear normal clothes!! And if its that people want to pick up a costume in asda, they have book related costumes there!

So, unanimous iabu thread?

DDs class theme this term is fairy tales which made it remarkably easy to stick her in a Belle dress

Well as you already acknowledge YABU...Mainly because all the Disney films do make books of them now but also most people want a costume that will work for more than one day.

YABU and a snob. There are plenty of frozen books out there. And many Disney princesses are based on old fairy tales. DD1 loves my little pony and we have those books too.

I don't understand what you are actually saying? Is it that WBD is not something you have to make an effort for!? And people shouldn't moan?

If so, well it is a toughie as you still have to work out what they will wear, and while in my household we have lots of costumes you still have to plan what they will wear

I love comic books! I had disney 'ladybird' books. I have read books that have later become films. So i know all of this, its just niggling me

In theory I get what you mean. However, sometimes it's just a case of using what you have at home - whether that is a superhero costume or an Elsa dress.

Or, you could end up in the situation I found myself in last year. Told DD1 to use her imagination a bit and think about the books she really liked instead of defaulting to disney princess. I got left trying to mar a Mrs Fox costume that was suitable for a full day at school in NZ summer temperatures. Amateur mistake on my part....

As has already been said, a large number of superheroes, Disney princesses and film characters either originated in books or have since had spin off books about them.

I think being snobby about reading material is a fantastic way to turn children off reading so it is a bit of a bug bear of mine.

Yanbu op, but think it's costumes they already have at home maybe? Dd wanted to go as Belle in full Disney outfit that she doesn't have and I'm not paying for She ended up as a card from Alice in Wonderland

I don't get wbd. All that happens is the kids dress up. They can dress up as a character from Disney or whatever. It doesn't mean they've read the book.
Then it's lessons as normal and receive a £1 book token.
Nothing else much happens. Well not at my kids primary. 2 yrs ago they didn't even bother with wbd.
Do most schools do anything more that actually involves celebrating actual books?

What exactly is niggling you? The bought costumes or the fact that books they are from arent 'bookish' enough?

DD's class theme IS superheroes, which would be my last choice of costume as she's only just turned 3 and has no idea what they are. I quite like making costumes out of bits of crap from charity shops (a hobby of mine pre children) and was a bit gutted at the restriction! Also would have been nice for her to recognise what she was dressed up as...

The fact that (almost) everyone is in one of those costumes. In DS's class it is basically boys go as spiderman and girls go in a disney dress.

It seems pointless to do it at all, its not encouraging anyone to read

WoodenSpoon at DD's school the P1s have teamed up with P6 to write bedtime stories, they've held a book swap so kids with little money can get some new books, and each class has gone round the school reading stories they've written to the others. I think it's quite good, really.

Also hate world book day. Hate. It. Awful pressure to spend money or find time that most parents don't have . Jesus it nearly finished me off last night . And as op points out really bugger all to do with books .

So is the issue you make the effort whilst other parents don't? Because if so, that's your issue, not theirs. All the characters you mention appear in books.

It really doesn't have to be much effort though. How much effort is Charlie bucket or Mathilda (for example)?

I don't personally see the harm or angst. There are SO many potential characters you an make as much or as little effort or spend as you want.
