Friend overdosed. Wtf to do?

My friend/neighbour has not been answering her phone all day and I just went to check on her. She's had a bit of a shit time of it lately so I was worried.

Found her in bed (I've got a key). She's taken 15 tramadol last night. She was trying to end it. She is conscious and pissed off that she's still here. Her head is hurting and she's feeling sick. I said she needs to go to hospital but she got really angry and said she will never forgive me if I call an ambulance. She said if she still feels bad tomorrow she'll go then.

I guess if she was going to die that would have happened by now but I'm worried she could have caused herself some serious damage. I've taken all the pills I can find in the house away from her and said I'll be back to check on her once dd2 is in bed. I really think she needs to get checked over but she is not at all happy with that suggestion. What should I do?

Could you call 111 and ask their opinion?

I have no idea if that's the best thing though sad]

Your poor friend.

Call an ambulance. She needs help one way or another.

You simply don't know what to believe so err on the side of caution.

Call an ambulance. Tramadol can cause liver failure which doesn't happen straight away, people can appear fine for quite some time then die with that.

Call an ambulance. I don't think you have any choice.

Ambulance. If you've got a local psychiatric unit, might be worth calling them. She's made a serious attempt on her own life - that's an emergency. You're a lovely friend, hope she's better soon.

Call an ambulance.

Have you read the page of tramadol and overdoses?

Call the ambulance.

She tried to kill herself, didn't succeed, and now wants to be left alone to...

Call the ambulance.

When I say, you don't know what to believe, I'm not suggesting your friend is lying, but if she under the influence of anything she may not remember how much she has taken. Could be more than 15 and sooner than last night.

I believe that she definitely took them last night, and hasn't taken any since. I really want her to get checked out but I believe her when she says she will never forgive me if I call someone.

Ambulance, agree.

If she never talks to you again, fine. She won't be talking to you again if she's dead either.

I'm not trying to be clever; she clearly needs help and I think you should help her even though she says she doesn't want you to. That's what true friends do IMO.

What kind of pills are they (standard or slow release?) and what strength? Just to figure out how much time you have to deal with it.

No matter the answers, you really do need to call an ambulance. While she is very low and angry now, she will forgive you once its all sorted out.

Ambulance. Her getting help is more important than whether she speaks to you ever again right now

Report
Maladicta · 29/02/2016 19:39

Without help she might not be in a position to speak to you anyway.

Well if you don't call an ambulance she might not talk to anyone ever again so what survey you got to lose?

OP I should also add, I'm really sorry you're in this situation.

She is clearly unwell and not capable of making her own decisions right now. She needs you to do that for her, even though she says she doesn't want you to.

But, bluntly put, what is worse? She lives and never forgives you, or she dies and you never forgive yourself?

Call an ambulance....she can still refuse to go to hospital but at least paramedics can check her over and you can rest assured you did all you could

Okay, don't call as she'll never forgive you but she could die or end up seriously ill. That better to live with?

"Tramadol can cause liver failure which doesn't happen straight away, people can appear fine for quite some time then die with that."

I think you are thinking of paracetamol.

Regardless of that, I'd be calling an ambulance. She can choose to never forgive you for calling it, but I'd rather that than having her death on my conscience.

If she really has taken just tramadol and none since last night, physically by now she is likely to be fine, but she needs a proper medical review and then a psychiatric review.

Im no expert but I think it was a cry for help rather than wanting to die. No one who attempts suicide wants to die. They just want a way out of their pain.
I do agree about calling the ambulance. You're a fantastic loving caring friend who she is blessed to have but you're not a medic. X
