AIBU?

Do any babies really sleep through at 6-8 weeks?

Aibu to kind of not believe that babies sleep through the night so early? Ok of course I believe it, but how on earth?

My first slept through, I mean properly 7-7 at 6 months old. I'd have thought that was quite good and lucky. My second still doesn't sleep through at 8 months, although he dropped night feeds at 6 months, he wakes lots for comfort though.

Loads of people I know and posters on here say that their babies slept through much earlier, by say 3 months, some as early as 6 weeks!

Mil tells me my dh was a 'terrible sleeper', but in his baby record book it says he first sleep through at 2 months old, how can that be terrible?

What I'm wondering is, when people say slept through, do they mean something else, such as going straight back to sleep after night feeds, or do they mean with a dream feed at midnight? When I imagine sleeping through I think of once they will fairly reliably do 7,8,9pm-6-7am, without any night feeds.

If yours did what is your secret?

My first two did. Still excellent sleepers to this day (12 &9). They were formula fed which I guess has an impact and big babies at birth. Slept through at 9&10 weeks respectively.

Oh and no dream feed, bath, bottle and slept 8pm- 6am which I consider right though.

Depends how you define 'sleeping through' - I've met some who mean 5/6 hours by that!

My DS did from six weeks, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. And we never had a peek out of him at night again. After he was out of nappies we had to wake him to use the loo when we went to bed.

Of course getting him up in the morning could be an issue later, but that's not unusual!

How? I have no idea. He was ff which may or may not be relevant.

I can always make new parents envious by telling them about him and perhaps I should run for the hills now!

DD did.

However - at 13 weeks we went on holiday and it knocked her completely, and she didn't sleep through again til she was nearly 2y!!!

At 8 weeks dd slept 11-5. Now at 4 months she can go 11-4 on a good night, or 8-1. Ds used to wake every 2-3 hours at that age. I wouldn't feel comfortable with 7-7 in an 8 week old. I prefer them more hungry and less sleepy.

Yes mine did from 5 weeks old, about 6-7 hours at a stretch which gradually got longer until he was sleeping about 12 hours at 12 weeks.

Secret? I mixed-fed so maybe it was the bottle feed late evening but I know babies in my NCT group who were breastfed 100% and were sleeping 12 hours at 12 weeks too. I slept through from about 6 weeks old too so maybe it's genetics.

DD slept through at 6 weeks, 7-7. Which was lovely

DS slept through at 4 weeks 10-6. Which was not so lovely as it wrecked my milk supply and ultimately lead to us ff. At least I'm rested though!

Yes that's what I consider right through, an 8-12 hour stretch with no feeds.

Oh and no secret here, apart from the fact I'm always very lucky.

Mine was 10 weeks when he slept through and did so every night from then on. His best friend was sleeping through from 6 weeks.

DD did 6 hours straight from 3 weeks old. It got longer as she got older.

DS "slept through" I considered when he slept from 7 to 7 but with a feed at 10pm (I woke him enough to feed). As far as I was concerned, not waking me up was the important bit. He was EBF and 8 weeks old when he got there.

Sleeping through is a bullshit aim tbh, and it drives me bonkers. Scientifically speaking, five hours is considered sleeping through.

My firstborn slept through at 7 weeks. This means he was asleep by seven-ish, then roused for the dream feed and a nappy change at ten. Then he'd sleep through till seven next morning. He dropped the dream feed after he was on solids.

Number two was about nine weeks (as above) and number three similar. But they weren't 7pm to 7am until on solids so it depends what you mean by 'through'.

Mine didn't. DD slept through (7-6) at 12 weeks old. DS is 13 months old and has slept through once in his life (about two weeks ago). He's usually up two or three times a night.

Mine did at 6 weeks until weaning 8-7 next day. Big at birth and formula fed. We basically co-slept with her in a Snuzpod. It was amazing. It has subsequently all gone to hell. I am so tired.

yes, both mine did - until the 3 month sleep regression phase that lasted 'til dc were toddlers

Quite often i found my definition of sleeping through (8pm until a decent time in the morning, like 6 am or later) was vastly different from other mums' ideas of sleeping through (midnight to 5am...) There was so much competitive parenting about sleeping that it was painful.

Neither of mine did until I sleep trained them. And now the bloody dog doesn't sleep through, despite being 3 years old!

Dd slept through from 6 weeks to 6 months & hasn't done since.
She is 6 and wakes every night for something.

I need to stop reading this! Have a 6 month old and evidently am not one of the 'lucky ones' Confused

One day she will sleep through... One day Smile

I too was going to say it depends on what you mean by 'sleeping through.
Neither dc1 or 2 every did, so when dc3 went through from 11.30pm - 6.30am at a few days old once I'd checked she was still alive I was dumbfounded. To my mind, that was 'sleeping through', although, sadly that's about the longest she ever did sleep through.
