www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/only-7-per-cent-of-britons-consider-themselves-feminists/

''When split out by gender, women were more likely to identify as feminist, with nine per cent using the label compared to four per cent of men.''

Sad

Probably because we are all scared off with the extreme feminists, who badger you about everything and make you feel like you're not feminist enough.

I think a lot of people are feminists without realising it. No way are only 9% of women feminists, it's probably more like 70/80% or more.

After all, how many women think that they should be paid less, or not be able to vote, or otherwise be treated differently, simply because they are female?

Well it's just the percentage that did the survey I'm a feminist I don't read the gaurdian or did a survey

Another quote I just noticed:

''But men were more supportive generally of equality between the sexes - 86 per cent wanted it for the women in their lives - compared to 74 per cent of women.''

More men than women want equality? Am I reading this right (sorry, english is not my first language) ?

Some of us don't want to IDENTIFY as anything! I'm a feminist, a woman, a mother
But I don't identify as one thing
I'm sick of hearing about identifying as this and identifying as that. Some of us don't want to give it headspace
I'm owllady and I identify as an alien parasite

YY owllady some of us are sick of this banging on about 'identifying' as a bloody feminist. I couldn't give a toss really, I have more significant things going on than trying to prove a done to death topic

Why the sad face?
It's only a small snap shot of women.
I don't get why we have to be card carrying right on spokesperson on feminism.
I am just quietly getting on with my life as a women interested in women's rights.
I have other things going on.

The word feminist has a lotof negativity about it, as said in the article. I think I'm a feminist but if you're not a ball breaking feminist on MN then its not good enough, it's too frothy and extreme. Its about the only topic Ive hidden.

Report
Nogoodblood · 24/02/2016 12:24

The problem is primarily that there isn't a clear definition of what a feminist is. I don't describe myself as a feminist (I used to) for this reason.

Report
NickNacks · 24/02/2016 12:25

Surely as a feminist op you would agree that the women surveyed are entitled to identify with whatever they like, whether that's the same as you or not. Smile

MrsJayy · 24/02/2016 12:25

Academic feminism is very different from day to day feminism imo

Don't feel sad for us that don't label ourselves feminist, parklyfe. You can be a decent human being that supports equal rights without being labeled one you know.

I have never been badgered by an extreme feminist. I once had someone ask me, quite aggressively, why I wore make up. I told her it was because I wanted to and didn't wish for further discussion. That was about 30 years ago.

At the same time I wore some extremely revealing outfits on nights out. Some women, and men, disapproved of them - though many of the men loved to hate them. That's their problem.

I don't think even half of them would have described themselves as feminists. They had other reasons for commenting negatively on my appearance and drawing unfounded conclusions from it.

Meanwhile, I was and continue to be, a feminist.

Yep find people associating with causes fucking boring.

I support equality for everyone.

Do people actually still read newspapers and believe that crap?

Report
etttvatre · 24/02/2016 12:27

A feminist is someone who believes in equality between the genders. It's as easy as that.

I'd love to see the particular question in that survey which led them to that conclusion.

Because, while I do identify as a feminist, if I had to choose one word out of many, then "feminist" would possibly not be the one.

Report
Katenka · 24/02/2016 12:28

It really depends on the actual question and how it was phrased.

Report
Osolea · 24/02/2016 12:28

Is that all?

I thought I was in a minority of women by refusing to identify as a feminist.
