Crossbreeds given that mongrel has a more complex definition but whatevs, I'm against breeding dogs on the whole. When the shelters aren't bursting at the seams ask me again.

That says they are mongrels though?

What do you mean 'Thoughts'? Are you inviting comments? How about sharing your opinion first? 'Thoughts' is almost as bad as 'Discuss'

I really want someone to breed a Jack Russell and Shitzu. I would give up all of my morals to own one of those puppies Grin

I agree with the poster. They are mixed breeds, given fancy names so that people will spend £££ on them. A fool and his money...

Ugh to trendy cross breeds with daft names.
The price offends me too.

You know this will kick off. Lots of, I needed a cockerpoo because my DS is allergic to any dog that isn't bred by Julie from down the road shite posts. Followed by, well do you want such and such a breed to die out, well DO YOU posts, and all along the people who work in rescues and deal daily with unwanted pets in collosal numbers are dismissed. I mean christ, I can write the thread for you.

There already are Jack Shitz. Look on gumtree. Pets4Homes. Preloved. Facebook.

Oh my god though, how cute would a bernnewfie be though?!

But yes, I agree that mixed bred dogs are mutts. Loveable mutts, but mutts nonetheless.

Just interested in people's opinion, the picture popped up on my Facebook by a Newfie pal. I think people paying a lot of money for one of these mix breeds are being hoodwinked. I believe in responsible breeding, we've had Bernese mountain dogs since I was wee, and it would break my heart to see them mixed with something else purely for profit.

There's nothing wrong with mongrels anyhow. I have had pedigree and mongrels, the pedigrees are often so inbred they have plagued me with vets bills, the mongrels haven't been sick or sorry once.

Really? People actually pay £££ for a Jack Shit? I will reiterate a fool and his money...

I'd heard of Jugs, my sister wants one. Who the fuck wants a dog named after a kitchen utensil?

We found our dog in the park, He followed us home and no one ever came forward for him.

He's some kind of collie, whippet, terrier mix aka a mongrel. He was free. He's just as dog like as all of these designer dogs that cost hundreds.

Yanbu

A friend of mine crossbred this way (different breeds) and it genuinely resulted in a litter split in the way Danny devito and Arnie were split in the film twins. Some inherited the desired traits of both breeds ( easy to train, fast potty training, loyal and bright) and the others were pitiful ( high anxiety, aggressive and jumpy)

I'm sure she did it wrong ( and no she's no longer a friend) and without much thought, but those pups were not worth the £400 they cost. Bad breeding shouldn't be allowed and most cases of cross breeding is bad breeding ( not all- some have genuinely thou roughly researched and properly health tested etc)

But then my 'thoughts' expand to breeding in general of all breeds/cross breeds etc, is it ethical? It should be restricted, maybe licensees IMO

I heard of something called Great Danoodle.

It is what it says on the tin, Great Dane x Poodle.
Madness.

My SIL has a Golden Doodle (God help us) which they paid an eye-watering amount of money for.

I want a miniature elephant (pig cross?). Why can't they get on with that instead of this bullshit.

Round my way every dog in the pound is a Pit-Rottie-Staff more's the pity.

I can understand people wanting a certain breed, and certainly don't think those that desire a Golden Retriever/Lab/German Shepherd etc are irresponsible for wanting and having one.

And if people want to pay $$$ then they should go for it. I have two shepherd mixes because they were puppies at the pound and were both super cute. But if/when the time comes to get another dog in the future, I may consider a pure bred Retriever and I'm happy to spend $$$ on one.

Here, shitzu/maltese/poodle/yorkie mixes go for about $1500.00 - crazy money really but if someone wants to spend that on a mongrel then so be it!

My parents have two rescued dogs. Both labradoodles.

Yeah, technically mongrels/mutts/whatever other name you want to call them, but seeing as a) it stops people asking "Ooh what crossbreed are they?" every time you tell someone they're a crossbreed, and b) it's one of the stupidest things to get worked up about ever, we'll keep calling them labradoodles.

These threads pop up every few weeks and they never make any more sense Hmm

Movingonmymind · 19/02/2016 21:35

Yep, overpriced mongrels but much healthier than the purebreed types especially pugs and so on. Kennel club demands have got a lot of answer for! And the rescue centres tend to be filled by grown up unwanted (often badly trained/with behavioural issues) such as staffies, JRTs so not the best choice.

Having worked in a pet shop when the cross breed naming started (not selling puppies, seeing people come i ), it did my head in.

No madam, it is not a Bull Shitz, it is a frigging mongrel, just because some idiot bred a bull dog with a shitzu does not make it a Bull Shitz, it makes it a mongrel and it makes you an idiot for spending £800 on a mongrel!

All sorts on crosses with stupid names..... Jack russell x shitzu = jack shitz, labrador x jack russel = jackalab, dalmation x labrador = dalador, shitzu x pappilion = pappitzu

I kid you not, people really genuinely thought it was a 'breed', we used to say, so the breeder gave you kennel club papers then?

One of the breeders we got our bernies from took a litter from one of her bitches when a few of her older dogs had sadly been put down. (We show our dogs at crufts, she's had a few champions) And she only picked studs that had the right temperment and build. Her dogs were checked at the vet to make sure they would be suitable for breeding (hip score etc) and if it didn't work, wasn't meant to be, she'd get a bitch from one of her other breeder friends. That's responsible breeding. It wasn't done for profit. I have a feeling a lot of these so called "designer" breeds are done out of a trial and error method

I have a yorkapoo, picked up from the RSPCA, she is a mongrel alright.

I had purebreed yorkies in the past, and agree that responsible breeders wouldn't be experimenting with mixes. When looking for DDog, I even saw someone advertising for a yorkie-staffordshire terrier cross. I though that was as wrong as breeding a seal with a seagull.
