AIBU?

Another parking one...

Hi - first time poster long time lurker here...

I live on a new housing estate, mainly 3/4 bed houses with 1 tiny garage and 1 space on the drive. Most people (including us) have 2 cars, so as the garage is tiny, one person has to park on the road. I have a polo and it won't fit in the garage so it isn't that we have two massive cars!

It's always a struggle to find somewhere as most people seem to park where they take up 2 spaces. It's also on a bus route so we have to leave enough space for the bus...

I got home tonight to find no spaces whatsoever on our street. I get home first so I park on the street so OH can have the drive, as the later it gets the less spaces there are. We have in the past had to park a few streets away, without complaining might I add.

So tonight I parked down a side street, on the road outside someones house. There was space behind me for 2 to 3 more cars.

A lady came out the conversation basically went like this:

Lady: 'Can you not park there, that's my husband's spot'
Me: 'I'm sorry there are no spaces anywhere else, it's just for tonight, there is space behind me so I'm sure he can park there'
Lady: 'Well why can't you park there and he can park where you are'
Me: 'Well I'm already parked and I have left plenty of space'
Lady: 'We bought a house so we could park on the road outside, maybe you should have bought a house with enough parking too'
Me: 'Well it is a public highway so you have no more right to park here than I do, our neighbours are parked outside our house'
Lady: 'Is it a public highway? (sarcasm) well I have asked you nicely so you are just being selfish now'

Then she went back inside and slammed her front door shut.

So AIBU in thinking that she was quite rude a bit entitled? I don't think I was rude to her - I didn't raise my voice or anything, and she just got gradually more angry with me.

Feeling quite upset now as I like our street and until now (4 years) we have had a really good relationship with our neighbours :(

Yes, she was being ridiculous. I wonder if she has that conversation every night? It's absurd to think that buying a house entitles you to a specific space on a public road.

Just ignore her. A guy asked me to move my car 2m forward once so he could park directly outside of his house, instead of in the adjacent space. I didn't.

She was being daft, don't let it bother you.

Missing the point of the thread but can you not pack on your drive and your husband park on the road blocking the drive?

She was being v U. I often had to leave my car down the street at my old place. Don't get me wrong, I liked to be able to park outside my house because then I could keep an eye on it / not have to lug the shopping so far, but I didn't make a song and dance about it.

YANBU - People who think they have the right to park outside their house on a public road are batty. Bloody idiots!

The people that put traffic cones in "their spot" are the absolute best.

Yes of course it is what. Is it a little bit extreme. Sorry, I'm just very sensitive to these kind of people. I once had one come storming out of her house when I'd parked my car on the public highway because she was pregnant and had to park around the corner. She neither cared nor apologised when I explained that I was very sorry but I was waiting for my uncle's coffin to arrive.

Yes, she was being ridiculous but it have killed you to back your car up? Probably quicker than arguing with her and would have left her in a better mood and you with a small sense of having done something nice.

It would also appear that the word whore has a completely different meaning where I come from. I wasn't implying that the woman was a prostitute.

Yanbu (she was) but planners and housebuilders are BU by not ensuring there's enough space in garages and driveways.

How on earth can you get away with selling s garage which cannot fit a small car in?

Wow that is ridiculous.
I was thinking the same as the poster who asked why you don't park on your drive and your do park across it?
In fact if everyone did his then there wouldn't be a problem surely.

The woman was being unreasonable.

Somebody who has no morals I think is the best way to put it. Somebody of dubious character.

If you park across your own drive then people start to think it's OK to do this and then THEY park over your driveway as well,

Speaking from experience....

YANBU at all OP.

My neighbour is very precious about parking neatly outside his own house. Does my head in. If we have guests and they park outside his house he comes round to check if we know whose car it is. He also polices everyone else's spaces and was really quite rude to a (then heavily pregnant) friend of DH's when she came to visit and parked outside the house on the other side of his. (During the day, when the street was half empty, I might add.)

Missing the point completely but I thought new houses have to have two parking spaces , excluding the garage as you can't force people to park in their garage

she doesnt own the space outside her home so you/anyone can park there

agree cant the last one home park across your drive - if they are good at parallel parking as assume be small gaps

I agree with the above poster who is wondering how there can be a garage built that is too small for any car? Not the point of the thread I know but I'm bewildered by this!

Garage sizes have stayed pretty standard but cars have gotten bigger. Our house was built in 1972, I can just fit my fiat 500 in it.
Same with parking spaces, planners and designers haven't really moved with the times because it suits them I suppose. If a scheme is only approve able with two parking spaces and making them a decent size means you'll only fit in one then they will submit two small spaces every time.
