AIBU?

She did look a bit like a bag lady.

A well-dressed bag lady

If you go against a dress code people WILL comment.
It's an occasion when everybody dresses up to the nines, men and woman.
There's a dress code.

So, if you rock up wearing a scruffy, unfeminine leather jacket and bulky scarf ensemble, then people are going to comment.
When I saw her, my immediate thought was ''wtf is she dressed like that''.
She was obviously trying to prove a point. What that was, God only knows.

Stephen Fry was only saying what most people were all thinking.

TAAT, this'll be gone within the hour.

Why start it?

By a bag lady, do you mean someone who lives on the streets? If you do, then of course she didn't look like a bag lady. She was wearing a leather jacket, jeans and a scarf. I thought she looked as she would at work.

He was rude. He was the host and he insulted one of the women who'd won an award. There's no excuse for it.

Why should she have to look "feminine"?

This will go the same as the last thread with pretty disgusting insults being thrown before it gets deleted.

But why, on the one occasion when you can pull out all the stops and dress up to the nines, would a person deliberately choose to dress like a sack of spuds? Confused

I'm guessing someone at the Baftas didn't wear a posh frock. Struggling to give a shit.

Jenny Bevan is a costume designer; a bloody brilliant Artist who Stephen Fry can't match in terms of talent.

He was a twat even if they are 'mates'.

There is no way on earth that a normal middle-aged woman is going to be able to compete with Cate Blanchett or Julianne Moore, let alone the younger stars. So why not choose an outfit you feel comfortable and attractive in? She had nothing to prove, she had won the BAFTA, her future employment is decided by her talent rather than her eveningwear choices.
Someone somewhere would be rolling their eyes, not matter what she chose to wear.

Why not?
Why wouldn't you want to look your best?

Whether you're 'feminine' or not, there's nothing wrong with dressing to look good, especially on such an occasion.

Why does feminine = best?

She probably believed she did look good.

Someone on the first thread predicted that this controversy would lead to another Fry Twitter flounce. Just heard on the news that he has indeed departed Twitter - for the third time! Silly chap.

Wtf has wearing a nice frock got to do with her talent?

Stephen Fry is a rude, arrogant arsehole, who can dish out bantz insults, but flies into a raging sulk if anyone dare call him out on his shite. And his comment about Eddie Redmayne was grim.

What did he say about Eddie, it's just the 'bag lady' comment that's getting the attention.

Yesterday, I had never heard of Judy Bevan but today, I'm now familiar with her work and think she is very talented indeed. If anything, she has 'won' the BAFTA dress award by dressing as she damn well pleased.

Come off it.
I bet there were millions of homes where the audiences thought ''Why on earth is she dressed like that?''
It's not even the fact she wasn't wearing a posh frock
Ellen Degneres doesn't wear a dress, but always looks smart and stylish.
If she'd been wearing a really beautiful, sharp trouser suit it wouldn't have been so bad.
