AIBU?

To be getting so f**ked off with my neighbours?

A young couple, early 20's, with a one year old child. Quite stand-offish for the first 10 months and pleasantries were never exchanged up until about 6 months ago.

They have recently purchased a new car. A loud diesel. That wouldn't bother me normally, but they go out at every stupid hour that God sends. 12am, 3am, 4.30am, 6am... you name it, they will come and go multiple times during the night. Even still, that's none of my business what they get up to on a night. The thing that pisses me off is the fact that the young lad drives the car like it's a rally car. Over acceleration to make the car sound "meatier", loud music... general boy racer/chavvy behaviour. So I get woken up every single time they come and go, and even my LO gets woken up sometimes.

AIBU for getting wound up about this? Considering there is nothing I can do about it?

Try politely asking if he could turn off the music before he gets home, as the car is loud enough on it's own.

Kill them with kindness, arrive holding some cakes, you never know it might work.

If not then contact the council about noise prevention.

The bloke that lives upstairs to me works on the door of a club and he comes home, puts the tv on and shouts down the phone at all hours.

This used to really annoy me and the more annoyed I got the more I'd be disturbed IYSWIM.

I'm so used to it that it really doesn't wake me anymore. I quite like the fact now that someone is up and about at this hour, it make me feel safe.

Agreed with the "kill it with kindness". These kind of neighbours you can only approach on a kind level and put the ball in their court. If they continue to be socially inept, it's time to politely talk to the authorities

I think we may have the same neighbours!

Are they taking the baby out all those hours?

Thanks for the replies :)

I'm not sure approaching them about it would work. They are quite arrogant and unfriendly in general and I fully believe they would take my complaints as an act of war, no matter how kindly I said it.

Another neighbour has complained about them before and she ended up having her car deeply scratched with something like a screwdriver. I'd rather not have the drama!

BastardGoDarkly I'm pretty sure they do. I hear two car doors slam every time so they must do, unless they leave the child at home..?

I've even assumed they're drug dealers with how often they go out, especially during the night!

They do sound rather dodgy OP. Is it a council/housing trust property? If so can't you complain to them?

I think you live the other side of my neighbours. They do this, with their awful souped up engine, throughtout the night and it's worse at weekends. Plus we get visitors with equally chavved up cars all through the nights, worse on Fridays. Thing is, I know they ARE dealing, as i've seen them bagging the stuff up in the back garden, and the stink from the plants honks, gets through the airbricks and everything. We ended up cellophaning the airbricks and sealing up all cracks, but even so it stinks when the plants bloom, the loft HONKS. Not to mention the lightbulbs constantly blowing and the fact that I really don't like the fact tht their kid wanders around in a nappy on the patio while they smoke themselves stupid. I've contacted the housing association and police but they stop for a bit then start up again.

Unfortunately we live rurally, have one PCSO and the police can't do anything apparently. Am waiting for the snow so I can photo the fact that their roof never gets frosty.

Vintage45 Yes it's a HA property. I'm not sure the HA take complaints very seriously though.. the other neighbour has complained about them at least twice to my knowledge!

phlebasconsidered That's awful, I'm surprised the police are shrugging it off!!

They have to put together a sort of "dossier" on them to be able to act, so they need rather a lot of complaints. Keep a record of events and keep complaining. The trust will eventually have to do something.

Speak to the other neighbours too.

Speak to the Police or Community Officer. We had a neighbour who had a loud car and very loud music. He also drove at speed down the street - probably not in excess of 30mph but too fast for the road conditions.

We reported him to the local Police Officer. Not too surprisingly he was already known to them so they paid him a visit and served him with some sort of official notice (Section something - can't remember what number) that basically said that if he continued to behave in that way his vehicle would be impounded. Amazingly it seemed to do the trick!
