To tell this woman off for letting her dog sh!t on my lawn?

Was getting ready for work this morning when I glanced out of the bedroom window to see a small white dog (something like a shih tzu - oh the irony) squatting on my front lawn doing a poo. Its very well dressed owner was standing by with a poo-bag.

I knocked loudly on the window and gestured for her to move the dog. She didn't but did call up 'sorry'.

I then went down stairs and opened the door and called over to her that it was disgusting to let her dog do its business on someone else's front lawn. By this point she was picking up the poo. She replied that she was sorry but that she couldn't help it because the dog had just decided. I told her that she should be in charge of her dog and that I thought it was appalling behaviour to do this to someone else's property.

Honestly she looked at me as though I had lost the plot. Did I over-react and WIBU? Is this somehow OK on the basis that she picked it up???

For the record the dog looked obedient enough as they walked off and the poo was not runny so I have no reason to think the dog was ill.

Personally I wouldn't have let my dog go on someone's lawn. It's easy enough to pull them off if they're on a lead. I can't say I'd have got as worked up as you did though considering she did apologise and pick it up.

Unless she purposely walked over to your lawn to ensure the dog shit on it, I think you are being unreasonable.

It's not great, but she did clean up after it.

YANBU. the dog should have been on a lead if being walked on the pavement (letting the dog go on to your lawn suggests insufficient control).

I'd have had a problem if she'd left it (would've probably chased her down the street :-). Since she picked it up though, I'd have probably just tutted and got on with my day.

We have a small strip of land with a hedge that borders our property. One man used to regularly let his dog piss up our hedge, until one morning I walked out and glared at him. To be fair, I don't think he had quite clocked that the hedge wasn't part of "public land".

I don't really take issue with dogs pooping on my land - as long as the owner cleans it up. Dogs like to poop on grass, and can't always hold it til they get to the public park. It's not ideal if you have kids playing on the lawn, but you can't police it all the time, and she did apologise. If she told you to fuck off, I'd have more sympathy for you.

Sometimes they just squat and whilst it's not hard to pull them to a better place (one of mine once did it in a junction!) it's a bit awkward and they're kind of unbalanced and really don't want to move.
She did pick it up and did apologise.
Perhaps if you see her again just give her a little smile. Peace and harmony for all!

What I meant by the first part of my comment (but neglected to clarify) was that if it was a regular occurrence (same dog), I'd get annoyed. But not for a one off.

She was at least picking up, but yes it was cheeky to let her dog go on your lawn. On balance YANBU but you sound a bit 'shouty' in your third paragraph, were you shouty?

My dog does it occasionally and whilst I try to move him onto the path it's not always possible if he's mid flow!

worra -i thought the same after I read my post. I guess I just thought as someone who takes pride in her own appearance, might she not think that others would take pride in their property? I don't think she lets the dog take a dump on her OWN lawn.

You are correct in saying the dog should not have been on your lawn in the first place but she was apologetic and cleaned up so I wouldn't be too mad about it .

Have you ever tried to move a dog mid poo? I have two tiny dogs, and one of them just refuses to move after she's decided that's where she's going, then I would end up cleaning a trail of poo from your garden. At least she picked it up and said sorry, she could of left it.

Has your garden got a boundary at all, or is it open? Unless it's fenced off, I doubt she deliberately encouraged the dog to shit on your lawn. She picked it up, and seemed like she was always intending to. It's annoying, but I think you overreacted.
