To have gone off cooking sunday dinner?

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 07/02/2016 14:45

we have always had a roast dinner on a sunday, until the last two week when DH & i were both down with flu, still not 100% now and we've got it all prepped... but i just really don't fucking want to cook it.

It just feels like so much effort, even though i know its now.

i just dont want to.

I have to shower the kids too, and both just seem like too much effort right now, but DH did all the cooking yesterday, and made breakfast this morning... am i unfair if i sit here long enough in the hope he does dinner too?

YANBU

Roast dinner is a lot of effort for a not that exciting meal IMO. Nice with a big crowd once in a blue moon but not often! Jacket potatoes will be order of the day here.

YANBU. I did one last week, gammon, roasters, brocolli and caulie bake, followed by big pudding. I felt shit all evening, bloated up and annoyed with myself for eating it all. And the mess it makes in the kitchen, ugh. Made up my mind there and then I was giving it a miss for a few weeks. We're having burgers tonight Grin.

Last time this happened DH requested just cooking sandwich ingredients and we'd skip the roast and just make leftover sandwiches. I was scandalised Grin but he and DS wore me down, so I tried it and it actually worked pretty well. I saved the veg and cooked it the next day with something else and we ate sandwiches with chicken, potatoes, stuffing and gravy.

Could you move away from a full roast on Sundays? We often have pies, stews, toad in the hole etc...

Or go to a pub!

I bloody love roast dinner and never mind doing it because it's the sort of cooking that I just dont have to think about and sleepwalk through it. No timers, it just sort of happens!

The prep is an effort though

I do a roast every other week and have a few cheats (unless it's christmas/easter) - frozen yorkshires and non par boiled spuds Blush

I love roast dinners, but being veggie I can shove all the veg to be roasted into the remoska, and then pop in the main after an hour, with any veg that would traditionally be boiled or steamed and have a meal ready 30 mins later all in one pan. So just gravy to make.

not that I could eat it right now, I have the same bug and am struggling to eat a proper meal at the moment.

When everyone's here (8) it's great to have a big roast with all the trimmings. And a pretty cheap way to feed 8 teens and adults tbh.

I have fallen out of love with the cooking of it mind you. I've been doing it a lot of years. The only thing that keeps me doing it is everyone else's enthusiasm for it tbh. Which is nice i suppose.

And to be honest it's never me doing the washing up. And there's always plenty of volunteers for the help with picking the crispy bits off the joint stirring the gravy bit.

Today there was only 3 adults and a toddler so i did a lesser roast - roast chicken, but with new potatoes and tinned peas.

I haven't done a full on roast in a decade. DP doesn't like them I know

I do a mini version occasionally for me and the kids but I can't tell you the last time I made a full roast.

  • mini version may be something like chicken breast, mash, veg and gravy. Or lamb neck fillets, new potatoes and veg... I do something like this once a month and not necessarily on an actual Sunday.

I love roast dinner!! But YY to all the mess. Since we've had DD and I've stopped working DH has been cooking the weekend meals so I just don't care anymore what we eat. He cooks. I'm more than happy with that!

hownottofuckup · 07/02/2016 14:58

I've given up tbh. No ones appetite is big enough to warrant the effort, left over get wasted and DD2 complains about anything I cook. I do the occasional roast chicken for DD1's benefit as she loves it but we have it with jacket potatoes salad and coleslaw.
Chinese New Years Eve today so Chinese takeaway it is. Can't wait Wink

We're roast dinner addicts in this house.

We get really disappointed in the summer when it's too hot to have one Blush

Mind you as much as I don't mind cooking it, DH has taken to cooking the roast every week for the last couple of years.

He's busy now making a honey roast ham with all the trimmings.

Lots of dishes, and takes a fair while to cook and not very long to eat!

I do like a roast though. Always gets much appreciation from everyone. Good excuse to seek the refuge of the kitchen and drink some wine Grin

I love roast dinners, but not really worth it unless there's a crowd. I live on my own but I do a family roast about once a month for 11 and buy a big joint, which cooks much better and more economical, too. It feeds a lot of people and I have the leftovers. There's a lot of prep in anything that serves that amount of people, but nothing else feels special enough for a family Sunday lunch.

Roasties and Yorkshires I part cook in advance. Just crisp up while the roast is resting and I'm making the gravy. If there's an offer on or a reduced for quick sale I buy it and freeze.

I cook a roast most Sundays. Dh loves it. If the kids are away we will just go to the pub though.

I know what you mean about not feeling like it. I don't really feel like cooking today.

I have the pork out ready to go in the oven and the spuds peeled. I will make gravy and put some paxo out for stuffing, then microwave veg and it is done.

Not sure why I doing it today though, when I got the meat all the kids were going to be here. Now it is just DH and I, so cold meat and bubble and squeak for supper tomorrow.

My DS hates roasts and refuses to eat them. I do not believe him and still cook it anyway, I can not see what there is not to like.

We only have them a few times a year because I get bored cooking the same thing, and even then it's rarely on a Sunday.
We are having matzo ball soup this evening

I get you but I cooked a roast beef dinner today and I just wrapped beef in tin foil an let it cool away for a few hours. Then I cheated and bought prepped vegetables as I too am sick of all the mess.

I did make my own roasties and mash and have enough dinner for tomorrow so it is a lazy way to cook (well i think it is for me)

Of course you aren't being unreasonable - you're recovering from the flu!

What kind of meat do you have? I'm wondering if you could do more of an all-in-one pot roast kind of affair? Quicker and less work too.

Get well soon Flowers

I am considered a weirdo amongst family and friends but I don't like roast dinner at all. Never cooked one. Never order it in a pub. Far rather have something else. My DH and DC don't expect one on Sundayever

I love a roast dinner as a treat (even more if someone else cooks it!) but I would never do it every Sunday.. takes up the day, makes too much mess/washing up & I always eat too much Blush
As our DC are still quite little we've fallen into the habit of "lasagne Sunday" as I know everyone will eat it - we tart it up with nice salad, glass of wine for grown ups and a nice pudding Grin
Yanbu OP - you are convalescing from the Flu!

I love roast dinners and try to do one every Sunday. But I don't peel potatos unless we've got guests. I don't peel any veg. I don't par boil stuff either I just throw it all in the oven and make some lovely gravy and that's it! And Stuffing is paxo.

I miss roast dinners so much I'm 11 weeks pregnant and struggling to eat anything Sad I've said to dh when I feel better I'm doing a full on roast with all the trimmings and I might even peel the spuds!
