AIBU?

Dss dyed his hair against our wishes and school is going to go mad

Dss dyed his hair yesterday to a blond colour and I personally don't like it (haven't said this). It looks very fake and doesn't not match because of his thick dark eyebrows and tanned skin tone.

Aibu to think that he did it so he should face the schools punishment.

Sounds awful- but Derek is right can't really exclude given prob have to exclude large portion of girls for doing the same.

Blonde is quite average they may be fine. Dying hair funny colours or badly is part of growing up.

How old is he? You say you haven't said you don't like it, but you say it was "against our wishes" (which is probably the very reason he did it, assuming he's a teenager, and asserting ownership of his own body/independence from your wishes.) It's his hair, his choice, his punishment if there is one. Sounds like you're making it a bit more dramatic than it needs to be ("school is going to go mad"? Really? School will tell him off, he'll be told off... it's pushing the limits but in a relatively "safe" way all things considered. It's not doing coke in the library...)

punishment over blonde?

if there is one I'd be asking if they do the same fir the girls.

dodgy hair is a right of passage growing up. it will grow out

How old is he?

If it looks ridiculous his mates will take the piss. That's more powerful than any punishment. Not that I know from personal experience or anything

That would be a non issue for me.

How old is he?

I have never known a school punish kids for blonde hair. It's usually extreme colours only.

His hair; his to deal with.

Report

Completely depends on how old he is.

Teenager - then he's done it so will have to face any consequences.

Primary school age - I would not be happy

What would I do? Take lots of photos for future use Grin

If it's a natural colour the school possibly won't be as bothered as if it were primary red, green or some other lurid colour.

I'm sure if it looks really bad his mates will make sure he never hears the end of it. Perhaps it was a dare with them because he and they knew you'd not approve.

I'm certain that an old friend of mine was very glad that we didn't have social media and mobile phones (let alone camera phones) when we were teens. He did a wash in, wash out dye job on his hair for Halloween one year. His naturally white blond hair remained bright orange - and I do mean orange rather than coppery red/ginger for rather a lot longer than it was supposed to.

How old, and anyway, his decision, his punishment from school to face.
I tell my dd this about her never wearing the correct uniform.

I'm very much hoping a primary school child wouldn't have access to peroxide.

Agree with PP

Why were you even expressing your wishes on his hair? It's his hair. Not yours

Helenluvsrob · 31/01/2016 19:20

Meh. Don't sweat the small stuff. School can punish if they want but, as it's a " natural shade" I doubt they'll care.

Fight with teens about stuff that matters.

Presumably if he has done the dye himself he's teenage?

And YY. Why would there be a school punishment for blonde hair?

More info required.

Why will school punish him?

If he's a teenager its not really any of your business - teenagers are meant to do basically harmless surface level things to their appearance to rebel against their parents, its in their job description...

The more fuss you make the more satisfaction you will give him.

Bluelilies · 31/01/2016 19:27

My DSS has done exactly the same, peroxide blond. His school rules are "natural colours only" but he seems to have got away with it.

I'd see what the school say. If they insist he can buy a coloured die and turn it back to some shade of brown. But no point you getting involved yet

How old is he?

I'd have helped him so it was done properly and talked him into a shade not far from his natural colour but outright saying no is going to have the situation you have.

Unless he's at primary.

Yseulte · 31/01/2016 19:30

I would just chuckle and tell him he looks like a rent boy then say no more about it.

It's up to the school to decide whether it's within the rules.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 31/01/2016 19:33

Coping with the re-growth and the dreaded black roots (and all his friends taking the piss ) will be punishment enough for the poor boy.

Note; Please let him know, if he wants to dye it back to dark brown, he will need to 'fill' the blonde hair with a reddish dye first to avoid it turning green. (hopefully you're still talking)

If he's old enough to buy the dye and old enough to dye it himself then he's old enough to take any punishment that comes his way (presuming he's not at primary?)

He'll look back at the photos and squirm - just like we all did with our disastrous hair styles.

He is 16, the school have a no die policy and it does not look like a natural shade at all.
