accessories.ee.co.uk/product/dgskbl/david_&goliath/blonde_phone_sock-_im_too_pretty_to_do_maths/

Found on the EE accessories shop.

I know it's a piece of pink printed tat but AIBU to think that telling young girls you can be either pretty or clever is absolutely shit?

Dreadful, who on earth thought that would be acceptable?

Urgh. That's horrific.

I was shopping for a new charger and decided to have a look at cases.

Of course DD was with me and wants me to buy it because it's pink and pretty and she likes the lady on it. She has no idea what it says (she's 4) but got a lecture on potential and limitations that probably went right over her head :o

wow - it must be 1950 when you had to be pretty and thick to catch a decent husband, and I didn't notice.

that is unspeakable. Let's hope no-one buys it.

So is being pretty the modern day equivalent to being the old fashioned image of blond and dumb?

This is gender stereotyping and should be stopped. Similar to this.

I despair, I really do, id have thought this sort of shite was outdated these days.

I wish I knew a maths, engineering or physics graduate, I buy her one all ironic like.

It is awful. David and goliath also do a range of clothing with the slogan "boys small, throw rocks at them" so I don't think they are general responsible retailers!!

Aaaaaarrrrggghh!

That's all I can think to say. Women spend their whole lives breaking down barriers to education, equal opportunities etc to get that. FFS.

It's bloody awful.

It's nowhere near clever enough to be "ironic". And what it actually says is horrid.

MaisyMooMoo · 31/01/2016 17:46

Well apparently we shouldn't get to worked up about it as it's only a bit of fun and no one takes these things seriously anyway. Or so it was said on a similar thread.

^^

Oh man, Dd HATES maths and we've had to get a tutor in. She would use this against me!

who on earth thought that would be acceptable?

Someone who thinks it will sell. And, alas, may be right.

Response from EE to the comment I posted on their FB page:

Thank you for your input on this accessory. We try to cater to a lot of different tastes - humor being the option in this accessory's case. We do apologize if you have found it to be offensive, I'm sure the designers didn't mean for this message to be taken seriously but simply as a silly jest.

Either way, we take everyone's feedback into account and I will send an insight form report with your review on this matter, thank you.

Realise this outs me so going to name change for all threads except this one!

I am a blonde chartered accountant. I would have loved this as a young professional for every time I went into a room full of middle aged men.

I kind of view the david and goliath stuff like that as taking the piss out of people who genuinely have those views?

Grim.

All part of the insidious socialisation of girls to be biddable , and 'good'.

be good (ie put up with all the shit)
Be pretty ( because God forbid you're worth anything other than as a bit of flesh)

When was the last time you saw a woman celebrated in the popular media for being intelligent? Basically never.

This stuff makes me despair.
