AIBU?

To want the Mirena out Right NOW!!!!

I'm fed up basically. had the Mirena coil fitted three weeks ago for uterine endometriosis (read horrendous periods). Gynae had pushed this option for a full twelve months but I hadn't been particularly keen - perfering just to 'manage.' Relented in the end as I just got to a point where I couldn't cope with the monthly pain, flooding etc.

Anyway, three weeks in. I've gained HALF a stone. Despite very healthy eating (I had been loosing weight prior to Mirena), my boobs are so sore I can barely touch them. And I'm as spotty as anything. (I've never had spots before)

I feel so depressed. AIBU to just have it out? I know I haven't had it long but I feel fat and horrible.

Add in the rage, and you are me about two years ago.

After four months of "allowing it to settle" I went back to the GP and cried buckets, complete with snotty nose and threatened to rip it out if they didn't remove it.

They removed it.

GP will tell you to wait and see if it settles. On repeat.

and talk you out of all the reasons it hasn't made you put on weight / given you spots.

I had those conversations (well the spots) as it is 'only a tiny amount of localised hormones that don't move from your groin area'

#bullshit

I had mine out after 5 months for ttc reasons but I am so glad it's gone and won't have hormonal contraception again. For me it just is not worth the messing with my anxiety /pmt etc.

It didn't work for me either, I managed for a while, but was bloated and emotional. Bled lots.
However ...
Might be worth mentioning that mine had somehow 'dislodged' so wasn't where it should be anyway.
Felt so relieved when it was removed!

It also messed up my fertility when I finally had mine removed (although they say it can't!) .... If you want it out, go and speak to the GP.

Thing is, 3 weeks is very soon so of course they'll tell you to let it settle. Took mine about 6 months although the symptoms I had were very mild in comparison - rage being the main one. They wouldn't be doing their job if they just said ok and took it straight out without advising you that it is worth giving it a bit longer.
I love mine now, like ABSOLUTELY LOVE it! It was worth those 6 months for me. Oh and I gained a small amount of weight initially but then started losing it again. I'm slimmer than normal at the moment actually.

Three weeks isn't very long. I've just had mine replaced and the first few weeks were a bit uncomfortable, but it's a price I'm willing to pay to mitigate my endo symptons.

Could you give it, say, another three weeks and see if you feel better?

I've gained about half a stone in total since having mine in (been in 3 years) and still am very spotty but I'd rather that than the 10 day periods that were horrendous (needed to empty my moon up every 45mins during the day) and only had 16 days in between them. It's settled down about 2-3 months after having it put and now I get 5-7 days of very light spotting.

I hated mine too. It hurt and bled and i got fatter over the first 5 months. I had an appointment to have it out when it suddenly got better.

I know i kept thinking 'how and why should i put up with this for so long?' But it was tolerable and the hideous periods weren't.

Anyway... i never liked it, just put up with it. And then just before chrustmas the bloody thing suddenly dislodged and tried falling out so I had a lovely nurse pull it out.

Works for me. I am on my second one now and could not be happier. Much better than the horrible heavy periods I used to have. I also was losing weight due to the blood loss. And had anaemia.

Evil contraption. I lasted 9 months. I don't get why they say the hormones are localised and can't cause these symptoms because they bloody do! It even says so in the leaflet! My GP said they have to put that with any product containing progesterone, it's standard wording, but doesn't actually apply to Mirena. BULLSHIT!

I have all these symptoms without having a coil. sigh

I think I'm pre-menopausal

I wonder if there's an opposite type of coil that takes them away.

I hated mine , it caused my anxiety to increase, weight gain and the periods didn't stop.

I was relieved to have a Hysterectomy to get rid of the bloody thing in all honesty.

Blimey. I have horrendous periods and have been toying with having the coil fitted to help but you've managed to put me off! I'd happily go through the menopause now tbh

I've had mine in for two months. Fitted for irregular bleeding and flooding during periods as I'm perimenopausal. I've had three periods since it was fitted, with no flooding which is great. Periods are becoming progressively lighter, although the irregular bleeding has continued. But, horrible breast pain for around 15 days each cycle, and I've just realised I've put about 5 lbs on in the last two weeks, whilst dieting. I'm not overweight, I was just trying to shift the 3 or 4 lbs I put on over Xmas, but getting on the scales yesterday was a shock, and same weight today too.

So, I'm willing to give it another couple of months, unless I continue to put weight on, but the weight gain, if it continues, will be a deal breaker for me.

I was awful on the mirena. Really hormonal and mood swingy.

After 5 months I asked to have it removed. Next appointment wasn't until just before Christmas, a month later. I missed the appointment as I had forgotten and by then it had actually settled down.

So I've left it. Despite the doctor telling me it would need about 3-4 months to settle I would say 6 months is more normal

I had a appointment to have mine removed too after 9 months of bleeding and suddenly all my symptoms stopped.

It's been a life saver to me.

3 weeks is nothing op. It's worth giving it a bit longer.

YANBU, I had mine for 14 months, they kept telling me to 'let it settle' too.
A year of acne on my back and temples, greasy hair (washing it daily was an absolute must), 1.5 stone weight gain, dark thick hairs sprouted on my abdomen, jaw line and edge of nipples, I was moody (er) and although my periods were very light, they lasted up to 3 bloody weeks and were all over the place. Plus I kept getting BV and Thrush.

A year of misery.

teeththief - the Mirena affects people in different ways. I've had one for more than a year and couldn't be happier with it: my previously horrendously heavy periods (I'm late 40s, presumably perimenopausal) have gradually disappeared, and no noticeable side effects or pain when it was fitted.

I think the people who have had bad experiences are more likely to post negative stuff (in the same way people who have had bad experiences at hotels and restaurants are more motivated to write reviews than people who have found places OK), but there must be millions of Mirena users out there and it certainly suits lots of people.

Unfortunately, you can't tell if you are going to love it or hate it until you actually have one fitted.

Please don't buy into the propaganda about contraceptives that the doctors tell you, and which healthcare industry is incentivised to disseminate - and they are incentivised.

If it's not working for you now, it's not working. I'm sorry about the endo, and I hope you manage to find another, non-hormonal, non-invasive way of dealing with it.

If your GP isn't amenable, try your local family planning clinic. I experienced dreadful hormonal lumpy chin spots on it and had always had good skin previously. It also made me really down and emotional.

8 months of hell for me before it was removed, I sat in the Dr's office in tears after I stood at the top of the stairs and thought nobody would care if I threw myself down them and killed myself! 1 week later it was gone.
It shocked me so much that I was in the surgery the next day and luckily the Dr agreed it was doing more harm than good.
Within 2 day of it being removed I felt normal and it was like the black cloud had lifted.
They told me when it was put in that it was localised hormones and wouldn't affect me like the pill did but it was hell for me.

I had an endo chunky day and my body spat it out after a month thankfully, never gotten rid of the lumpy chin zits though, they arrived a few days after the bloddy thing went in and have never gone away again.

I took mine out in the middle of the night as my GP refused to remove it. If you have a google, there is plenty of information about how to do it - the hardest bit is getting a grip on the wires, but once you have them then it comes out like a tampon Grin

That said, I removed mine after 3 months as I was verging on suicidal (among other side effects including insomnia and my hair falling out).

I'd maybe give it a bit longer than three weeks if you can handle it....
