AIBU?

To wear split knee black jeans and a leather biker jacket at 53?

I'm meeting people I haven't seen in a long while so tried on some new clobber. Dd said I looked fine, but I can't get over the fact I'm 53. Mutton and lamb spring to mind.

To give you something to go on,I'm 5ft 7 and a size 6 to 8 with hair just past my shoulders.

You don't have to be kind, just tell me what you think!

Do you like them?

Does wearing them make you happy?

If so, go for it.

Unless you're at an event with a dress code of course.

YANBU to wear whatever you want!

Sounds great. It's not rally about age in my opinion. It's about wearing something that just doesn't suit you. If your daughter says it looks great then trust her - she'd be too embarrassed to let you out otherwise Grin

Sounds fab, not mutton at all.

Mutton is tits hanging out with an optional skirt up your arse.

52 here and would (and do) wear a biker jacket. I don't wear split jeans but only because I don't like them and they wouldn't suit me not because of my age.

Sounds fine to me Smile

Sounds wonderful. I go to gigs dressed like this - I'm 44 - last one was Bring Me the Horizon and most of the other people there are old enough to be my kids. Do I care - do I fuck. Love it.

I do like the look yes. And from the back I look quite good, my dd said I look young, but then of course I turn round and there's a 53 year old visog! I used to wear a leather in my teens, as I had a motorbike, but that was 35 years ago!

If you think they suit you then age shouldn't come into it.

On an entirely different note, I'm not keen on the split jeans you seen nowadays. I preffered the 'ripped' look in the 90s (or was it 80s?)

I just keep seeing teenager's knees poking through their jeans, but they look too carefully cut.

Sorry for the hijack but I've wanted to get that off my chest for ages Grin

YANBU.

It would be silly to dress according to what you think you should wear. You're tallish and slim so I expect anything would look good on you. Don't give a second thought to shoulds. Wear whatever you like.

I just want warm knees ...

Biker jacket yes but the split knees jeans are a bit naff and won't your old creaky knees get cold. Wink

Actually I think you should wear what you fancy.

I would hope that by the time I reach my fifties, I wouldn't give a toss what other people think.....

Actually, the clothes are DD's! I tried hers on. Maybe that's why it seems wrong. She's 17 and gorgeous!

Yes. Indeed. Wish I was still a size 6.

I don't like split knees jeans, but that's on anyone.

I may be a size 6 but I have a bucket load of health problems, and I would dearly love to be a curvy 10 at least.

Having second thoughts about the split knees now. Going to look out for women in RL wearing them.

Have you got good knees? You sound as though you would look fab tbh. I'm also a size 6 with reasonable legs and longish hair and do really worry that I look young from the back but old from the front! (50 years old)

The alternative is what though? To wear elasticated slacks? Ain't gonna happen!

If you want to wow the friends you haven't seen in a long time (possibly of course , unlike me you are not vain and shallow, but if there is an element of that) go with the jacket and plain black, skinny jeans.

If , like me, the friends are judgemental sourpusses, the holey knees jeans gives them the opportunity of saying " ha- who does she think she is" which non-holey knees jeans don't.

If however you and your friends are lovely people the above advice is wholly redundant.

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with your age, but how the clothes fit you.

If you were 20 yo, but had the wrong body shape, you would look ridiculous. (Same thing when people try to wear clothes which are clearly the wrong size. No-one knows what size you really are, but everyone can tell if yours are 1 or 3 sizes too small).

If you think you look great, and your kid told you so, then go for it! Make the most of it.

Regarding the split jeans, I'd say it depends where you are. People are much more forgiving in Central London than they are in some smaller towns in the middle of nowhere. The trousers are fashionable, might as well wear them today, they will look dated tomorrow.

I've just bought a bright orange mini skirt and spotty jumper, after believing for ages that orange doesn't suit me (thanks Mum). And I am in my 30s, and certainly not a size 6! So no, YANBU. Life's too short!

Leather jacket no prob at all, whatever age.

Ripped jeans - a no from me. They don't look great, even with young knees peeping out.
