A friend of mine is struggling with her kids. No sn and they range from 3-13 (4 DC). Can anyone recommend any parenting books that can help her? She is struggling with discipline and positive reinforcement. Her husband is armed forces so is not home but when he is, doesn't like to discipline them.

'How to talk so kids will listen and listen so kids will talk' can't remember author

Also, I found 'Raising your Spirited Child' helpful, but I'll probably get shot down for that one as I know how MN feels about 'spirited children'Grin

I second 'how to talk so kids will listen'. '3, 2, 1 magic' is good too though might not be as effective for the eldest.

I also think your friend's dh needs to step up. I'm a forces child and my dad was away much of the time but when he was home he was almost as strict as my mum. No amount of discipline will work if the kids know dad will let them do what they want.

He's almost a Disney dad! He loves the kids but they run riot and to be fair my friend enjoys her "downtime" too. But when he's not there it's hard for her.
