AIBU?

to worry about leaving baby tomorrow night?

I've got a 9 and a half month old baby who is breast fed on demand and who I've never really left. She's big and healthy, and pretty attached to me.

Tomorrow night I need to go out to a funeral in the evening in another city. I'll be away from home 4-9/10pm. My husband will look after the baby (and our other child), and I know he'll look after her well, but I'm anxious.

  1. She is really bad at sleeping and nurses to sleep at bedtime. Husband can wear her in the sling about the house but still.

  1. I haven't managed to express much milk. I've only got about 2.5 ounces to leave in a bottle, and she only had her first try of a bottle the other day. I'll feed her just before I leave at 3.30 and when I return at 9.30 but I'm worried about what she'll do in the evening. She does eat and drinks water from a cup too.

Do you think this will be ok, just for tomorrow night? I can continue expressing tomorrow in the day and hopefully be able to leave a bit more.

If it was me I'd think about getting a couple of cartons of formula just in case - mine were EBF too and I understand that's probably not ideal but it's better than her being really hungry with no other options. 2.5 ounces isn't much at all for that length of time.

Of course there's no guarantees she'll drink the formula of course...

My dd was like that and tbh would just wait until I was back as she was a bottle refuser. Once I went back to work she did take a bottle of cows milk so that would be another option as a one off? She'll be.fine.Flowers

Give her some fun foods.

Maybe carrot sticks she can dunk in mayo.

Toast or crackers.

With water too, she should be fine.

She might be tired, but she will be ok.

Don't worry too much, if she takes enough food in the evening with some water in a beaker and an extra yogurt she'll be fine. Hopefully she'll sleep in the sling. I left my eldest for the day & evening when she was 8 months old, my mum phoned after a couple of hours to tell me that she wouldn't take a bottle! She was fine.

She'll be fine, I agree with others about food. Also get some formula just to be safe.

I went out at night when my baby was 2 weeks old. Only for 4 hours and everything was fine. I wouldn't worry

She'll be fine. It'll be a bit different for her but she'll have her daddy and they'll figure it out.

I have a 21 month old DD who still has a BF before bed, but she's had numerous nights with her Nana or DH putting her to bed since about 7 months and no problems.

Granted she ends up going to sleep a little later than usual but they each have different ways of getting her down and she always wakes up smiling the next morningSmile.

Ah this is really helping - I've been so worried. I'll get some emergency formula.

Can you take her with you? Seems like it might be less stressful. Sorry for your loss. x

At 9.5 months she's more than strong enough physically to cope with not being fed. And she's starting to eat bits and bobs anyway. Please don't beat yourself up OP, your dd might have a bit of a grumpy shout at her dad for not having boobs, but it won't be for very long and it won't be lifechangingly upsetting for her. Focus on supporting your grown-up family/friend who has been bereaved. Flowers

Don't worry about this. She'll either drink the expressed/formula milk or she won't - doesn't matter either way, she's big enough.
It actually sounds like you need to do this, give her some time with her daddy.

Had a similar issue when DD was a similar age. She also has CMPA so formula wasn't an option.

Only thing I can suggest is a manual pump. It took me half an hour to get a few measly ounces with my Medela Swing but I can get 8oz in half that time with my Avent pump (I'm going back to work soon so pumping daily)

Getting milk is only half the battle, my DD is a bottle refuser

Your DD will be fine, give her a big feed before you leave and make sure there are snacks for her.

At that age, she'll be fine for a few hours without milk. No need to buy formula either. Just get your DH to distract her and offer plenty of water to her. And let her have some food too, she'll be fine. She'll probably pull the top off you when you walk in the door though!
