AIBU?

To think MIL is wrong and DM is right

DH and I have had a stupid argument over who's DM is right about freezing milk and bread.

So I like to have a bit of milk and bread in the freezer just encase we run out or if it snows. I don't like driving in the snow and DH might be at work when I want a cup of tea.

MIL was doing a noisy in our freezer and saw packets of 2 slices of bread and individual pints of semi skimmed milk.

MIL told DH that a) semi skimmed milk shouldn't be frozen b)freezing 2 slices of bread individually rather than a whole loaf makes the bread tough.

When DH told me I disagreed and said thats how my DM does it and he has never complained about the bread. Its in 2s so you only take what you need rather than the whole loaf.

DH is now in a huff that I always think my DM is right she is and MIL is wrong. My MIL has some daft ideas when it comes to food. For example you need to throw out the whole block of cheese is it isn't eaten within 3 days but will happily eat opened chicken after its used buy date sometimes a week after the use by date even if its grey and kind of smells!

So aibu to think that yes my DM is right.

This is a weird non problem.

Neither are right or wrong. It's a difference of opinion and habit.

If you freeze an entire loaf of bread then when you want a slice or two you just prize them apart. Simple.

Yes she is. My mum always froze milk and it was fine. I freeze bread and it's fine when it's thawed. Out of date, smelly chicken .. No way !

I think there's more to this than the bread and milk. It all sounds a bit 'My mum, your mum'.

How old are you two?

I freeze semi skimmed milk but it does end up watery when you defrost. I don't mind though.
No opinion on the bread getting stale but it's a lot of effort and bags when you can just pick two slices out of the bag if you want 2.

Yes I know its a stupid issue. DH is annoying me going on and on about it acting all hard done by and I need to vent.

It's just a difference of opinion, that is all.

Full fat milk does freeze best. And any bread will deteriorate if not properly sealed or frozen for too long. So both right in a way. Now grow up and stop arguing about shite. Smile

I always freeze whole loaves and just prise a couple of slices off. Just make sure you give it a bit of a shake before freezing to separate them.

He's hard done by because you don't agree with his mummy?

Idiot! And why is your mil nosing in your fridge?

I only look in my dils fridge to make her a cuppa. Wouldn't dream of commenting although I did once leave her a bottle of bubbly on her birthday!! Grin

It's not your mothers/mild fridge it's yours. Their opinion doesn't count.

Semi skimmed milk freezes perfectly. I freeze a whole sliced loaf after putting it in a second bag (I use a zip lock one) I just pull off the slices I need. I think freezing just two slices does make the bread dry out.

Envy off chicken...

agree to disagree and leave it. You're grown adults, who cares what mummy thinks is right or wrong?

I freeze bread, but I do think it's a bit staler when defrosted. I've never tried freezing bread.

You do sound like you have a my mum/your mum thing going on.

Well the only way to test it is to freeze bread both ways and make him eat it without telling him which is which and see if he can guess.

And feed him a glass of defrosted semi skimmed milk and non-defrosted and see if he can tell the difference.

And when if he can't, tell him to stand there in his wrongness being wrong Grin

I freeze bread and milk, both are fine.

Why was MIL in your freezer? Had you asked her to retrieve something or was she being an insufferable busybody?

I cannot possibly decide whether DM or MIL are correct about the bread and milk without this vital piece of info. Grin

I freeze sandwich bread in its original plastic wrapper and just take what I need. It defrosts in minutes or I use it for toast. Baguettes and croissant and other items freeze very well.

Milk does tend to separate a bit after being frozen but it's OK. And for your MIL's info, many cheeses freeze quite well; I buy my favorites on sale and freeze them all the time. Butter, too.

But your DH needs to understand that all of this is a question of subjective taste, not objective facts. One person's "stale" or "tough" is another person's "fine!" - there is no right or wrong.

Are you putting those two slices of bread in a plastic bag each? That's rather wasteful.

I don't know anything about freezing milk - never tried it. But then I live less than 5 minutes walk to 4 different shops that could sell me milk.

Chicken ... just digusting! Never eat chicken at her house.

Ok ok yes DH and I have always had a your mum/my mum thing going on. I do love my MIL but she is a bit crackers and I like noising my DH about it.

Yes we do sometimes argue well bicker over stupid funny shit especially when there is other serious not funny stuff going on especially like what's going on with SIL.

Even though we have been married since we were 16 and are in our 30s we do still bicker like well 16yos.Blush

I'd be lost without my frozen Semi milk as I'm crap at remembering to buy it.
You need to let it defrost completely and give is a good shake otherwise it can be watery.
So one point to your mum.

I'd side with his mum on the bread issue. I freeze an entire loaf and prise off a few slices if I need them.
One point to his mum.

I have a book which lists tonnes of food and if you can freeze them, how to and how long for. I can look it up if you like Grin.

DH has this mad vacuum sealer thing so I use that to seal it in reusable bags.

MIL is a prowler always has been. I'm ok with her prowling in the kitchen. My bedroom is off limits.

If the bread is already sliced you don't need to separate it into twos and waste a load of packaging. It prises apart easily enough. I always keep bread in the freezer.

If I make my own bread any that we don't use that day gets sliced up and frozen in one bag. I can then take out as many slices as required.

I don't freeze milk as we live within walking distance of a Co-op.

emotionsecho · 18/01/2016 19:48

I'm siding with you and your mum OP.

Semi-skimmed milk freezes absolutely fine, as does all milk, just give it a shake when defrosted.

Nothing wrong with freezing two slices of bread either. I often split a loaf up into either two or four slices batches, wrap and freeze, it doesn't make any difference to the bread whether it is frozen as a whole loaf or not.

However, like others, I think this is a daft thing to argue over and does seem a bit of a pantomime 'my mum/your mum' thing.
