AIBU?

to wonder if this product of mine is too niche for mass appeal?

I'm not sure if that's the right word I'm searching for here but I'm sure a helpful MNetter with correct me if not!

I make jewellery and I have a product which I personally really like but I don't know if its something that will appeal to a wide market and if I should bother trying to sell it or if its something that only appeals to me and others that work in a particular area.

Obviously I realise that I can't really expect you to comment without knowing what it is, and this may out me but here it is:

Its a 'DNA' bracelet. Well, it looks like a strand of DNA, using pairs of different coloured beads to simulate the A-T/G-C base pairs and either leather or hemp cord. I vary the patterns of the beads each time I make one to try and make each bracelet unique Smile

Aibu to think this is this something people will be interested in? Or is it a bit too geeky to have mass appeal?

I think it sounds cool, but I am a geeky person!

Geeks have plenty of money and it's just the sort of thing they would like.

I'd love a DNA bracelet being a science geek myself, to go with my Schrödinger's cat t shirt and my geek bumper sticker.

I think it sounds fab.

But then I've been hankering after an oxytocin necklace for quite a while.

I'd have to see it to know.

I think it sounds great! A lot will depend on the quality though.

Also, as it's beads it's very easy for someone to make themselves at home.

Try Etsy for selling them.

Good luck!

I'm a geek and I like the sound of it :)

The idea really reminds me of some jewellery I've seen on (I think) Etsy, which is little silver molecular structures on necklaces. I've also seen plenty of things themed on the periodic table etc. There's obviously a demand for it there.

Sounds lovely, but wouldn't a double helix be a little uncomfortable to wear? It would need to be subtle, too, for me to wear it.

Geeky has been mainstream for at least a decade. If you Google there are quite a lot of DNA bracelets around - what will make yours stand out from the crowd?

I think it sounds great, but depends how it looks. I don't have a science background either, arts all the way.

'To try and make each one unique' How many variables are there? As if there are only a few, then it doesn't seem very dna-ish.

Plus it had to look nice, obvs.

Sounds nice. I love the secret meaning it would have, but you'd do better to actually make a gene with four colours (if you can find one short enough!)

Not sure, sounds a bit marmite to me, but if well made I can see some people liking them. Not convinced you'd make a living from them though.

I love the idea, but as a very soft core geek, that's not how I imagine DNA to look! Grin should have paid more attention in biology.

Generally I would find that very beady. Is there any way to make them a bit more delicate?

I really like it but don't get the DNA thing.

I am a bit of a science geek and i think the brackets you have posted, although very nice, don't scream DNA to me. They just look like beaded bracelets. How much were you thinking of asking for them?

Thespotted, I'm not exactly sure how many variables but I could do them in pretty much any colour or colours that coordinate with one another - there are only 4 different beads in any strand but obviously the order they go in could be different each time. There might be different numbers of beads too depending on how long/short they are.

Apologies for the picture, its not very good quality but looks really nice in RL.

Human, I have seen a few DNA bracelets but a lot of them seem to be made of metal and none of them seem to be made so each one is different if you see what I mean but I appriciate that there could be some that exist I just haven't seen them yet.

I think maybe it is missing the whole double helix look?

Timeforanamechangy · 15/01/2016 22:02

I can definately make it more delicate, this one was made slightly larger than I would have liked as I didn't have the right size stringing materials to hand.

It's not necessarily immediately obvious but then that was kind of the idea, the other ones I've seen are really obvious! I made one for someone recently as a gift and the first thing she said was 'its a DNA strand!' but then she is a sciencey person hence my question here Smile

Yes, seeing a picture of yours, they're quite different from a lot of what's available. It's cure but it doesn't scream DNA to me? Though that could be deliberate, of course. Overall I like it but I'm not a big bracelet wearer so personally would want something more delicate and lightweight, but I can see someone who's into chunky bracelets wearing one.

This is a closer view of it, the beads are really iridescent and shiny in RL but it doesn't quite come across in pictures :/
