YANBU They are nobs. I know if might make them a few minutes later, but people need to pull up and show respect when they see a hearse ffs.

Thankfully I was just an observer :( it's made me so cross. It wasn't just one car either, it was four or five..until I pulled up and let it reverse. There was one car in the procession, so hardly a huge funeral either

At my dads funeral the funeral car driver at the back drove in the middle of the road to prevent this happening.

Awful. More than once I've seen people trying to overtake funeral processions while they're doing the slow bit, and end up between the cars. This happened with my nans funeral - the bastard was driving up the arse of the hearse!

At my Dad's funeral I drove behind the hearse with my Mum and we were overtaken by the vicar!

There is no real excuse to behave like a twat near a funeral procession.

I held up an entire roundabout, including the police van directly behind me, not long after I had passed my test for a funeral. I didn't mean to as it happens. The hearse pulled out on me as I was already going quite slow and I panicked a little bit and came to a complete standstill unsure of what to do next as it was my right of way but was conscious that the mourners car needed to follow also.
However, by holding the traffic up it let the 2 or 3 non official mourners cars following to stay in line.

The look of gratitude on the mourners faces has stayed with me to this day so now I always think funeral - there may be at least another half dozen cars in the procession - back off!

At the funeral of my dhs nan someone shoved themselves between the hearse and the first mourners car and stayed between us for about 5 minutes till he eventually turned off. I was really surprised they didn't pull in at the time to let the three cars travel together. We had people overtake too. I can't imagine doing that myself. I agree OP, they look like right twatty twats.

Just to play devils advocate, you never know why these people may be in a rush. It might be something important that means they can't wait. I have IBS which can come on without warning, and if this happened to me behind a hearse I'd probably overtake it too!

I have IBD and if I was in a flare up and found myself behind a funeral procession, I'd just have to hope for the best or crap myself.

We were hurtling along the motorway in Southern Italy years ago (late for a plane) and were overtaken by a hearse with coffin aboard going at over 100mph :)

Slade, do you have IBS? If not, you have no idea - the pain can be so intense if you can't go that it feels like you are about to pass out at times.

Other than emergency situs, definitely do not overtake, or even drive close imo.

My Dh overtook the hearse that was carrying my father to a remote graveyard no one bar the hearse driver knew how to get to.
My DH almost ended up in a hearse himself after that

Having said that, one guy interrupted my uncles procession.

For him it was a genuine mistake as he pulled over as soon as could, he looked absolutely mortified and mouthed 'so sorry' at us all.

So he was a redeemable twat!

The Vicar has to overtake. He needs to get there first and yet be one of the last to leave (thinking crem to church here!) My dad used to do another route to the hearse but more than once he was pulled up for speeding 🙄 He was always let off when he explained (and was in full gear). Sometimes there isn't another route I imagine...

If you are about to pass out through pain then an overtaking manoeuvre would be quite unwise anyway. Pulling over would be best.

I have IBS and if I was in an arrack I'd have to pull over. Certainly not be able to overtake a vehicle. That would be foolish and dangerous as the pain stops you from concentrating.

I once inadvertently halted a funeral procession by crossing the road. I hadn't realised that the car that I'd only spotted a little way off in my peripheral vision was a hearse so I stepped out onto the crossing. It was only when I looked properly and was quite a distance across the road that I realised, by which time it was stopping. I then didn't know whether to run the remainder or whether wouldn't be sombre or respectful enough so I sort of bowed an apology and minced across, Mrs Overall style. Awful.
