Went to cinema this week with DH, planning to take DS and his brother tomorrow for birthday treat. I can't believe that in 2016 we will be forced to walk past this poster and that they have even called the film Dirty Granpa!

Really??? Letching older man perving young woman's suggestively raised arse whilst other man holds 'petrol nozzle' pointing at her?? I don't want my sons seeing this sexist shit.
(only one cinema in our town btw)

Can't you just ensure he is looking the other way?

I don't like a lot of stuff that is displayed in public places.

But I won't fault a cinema for displaying material related to the films it is showing.

Just don't go to the cinema then if it bothers you that much

Don't go to the cinema until the poster's taken down.

Phone up the cinema and register your annoyance.

Tell your ds not to look at the poster.

Your ds might not even notice it, to a child he might not even get the innuendo in the picture.

Posted too soon, I think you're overreacting.

YABU

That poster is not offensive. It is just silly.

If you don't make a big deal out of it, your children probably won't notice it.

YANBU. It does unfortunately become normal for children to see this rubbish, however much we try and protect them.

To the posters suggesting that she tells her son not to look, what do you suggest, walking around with blinkers on? Or just not going out of the house at all?

Report
VintageDresses · 08/01/2016 10:34

From your description I was ready to say YANBU, but really?

Unless you know the context, it's not even clear he's looking at her backside and there's nothing suggestive about the petrol nozzle unless you're looking for it.

Report
Sirzy · 08/01/2016 10:34

I doubt it would even register with most children!

The title of the film sounds like a Family Guy film joke they would make about washed up actors doing OTT shitty movies. I saw the ad on a bus yesterday, as soon as I saw the title I groaned.

You were in Taxi Driver, ffs, man. Do you really need the money? Are you that desperate?

It's upsetting that shit like this is being made. And I agree that the film poster is appalling. The headless bodiless woman, who just exists to be a sexy ass, the penis-replacement petrol pump pointed at her headless bodiless ass, both men gawping like they've never seen a woman's ass before ... give me strength.

OOI, which film are you going to see. IMO there's far more (normal/accepted) sexism in most kids films than there is in that picture.

Dinobab · 08/01/2016 10:37

YABU At 8 I wouldn't have thought twice about that.
I also would have thought dirty granpa literally meant dirty as in unclean.
I guess because 8 year olds don't state at women's bums they wouldn't think that's what they are doing the the picture because they wouldn't understand that.

There is going to posters and other advertising you are not going to approve of in public places i saw a 50shades ad on the side of a bus i pers8nally think 50 shades is porn anyway your sons will probably not notice or care. The film is a morality tale apparently so he becomes a not so dirty grandpa

Sorry - I didn't word my OP well. Its not just that I don't want my DS to see giant sized sexist posters - I don't want ANYBODY see giant sized sexist posters in public places! They are on outside of cinema in busy shopping area so you see them even if you're not going to cinema. Do other people think this is unacceptable or am I just out of touch and most people not bothered about this kind of stuff? I know a poster is not a major issue compared to lots of things in the world right now but how women are perceived in our society IS important and has lots of serious consequences.

It is sexist. Depending on the age of the children either: they won't notice it or go five minutes early so you can have time to critique this image and discuss with your children why it is sexist.

I am teetering on the fence about this I think a lot of advertising crosses a line

I think it is a shit poster, I agree it is sexist and embarrassing. I also think mine would walk right past it, it holds no interest whatsoever for kids.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 08/01/2016 10:42

kelda are you referring to my comment?

I was talking to the OP, if she is so offended by the poster yet still wants to take him it's a suggestion.

I was also being flippant Wink.

We took the DCs to watch star wars as a christmas treat. The trailer for this film was shown. It was inappropriate IMO but I wouldn't get too wound up about it. At the end of the day we used to see Benny Hill when we were younger!

I find it offensive, so no, I don't think YABU.

Don't know what's more depressing, the existence of the poster or the fact that so many on here don't see the problem with it................
