To hate playdough??

I haven't had it in the house for years, but we just moved house 6 days ago and the children needed some occupation that wasn't attached to a screen . I spied a play dough kit in Aldi and thought they would enjoy it.

Oh, they DO. It was a successful purchase from their point of view but I am going crazy. The colours are all mixed into a muddy brown! There are tiny balls of it underfoot! They don't put it away properly without my constant nagging! We end up throwing a bit of it in the bin every time they are done playing because it gets covered in crumbs. The carpets have thus far survived, but only because of draconian rules. The whole thing has stressed me out.

And I will dig this thread up in a few years when I again think we haven't had it in a while and therefore they must feel deprived. As far as I'm concerned, it should only be found in nurseries and playgroups!

My only advice is to ditch the evil shop bought stuff and make some at home!

It's easy to make, you only need flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, a spot of oil and whatever food colouring you fancy. It takes about 5 mins to make, is all the same colour (ideal for those of us who become twitchy about colours being mixed...) and when dry brushes easily out of the carpet!

I hate it. Ds got some for Christmas. It will be gone soon. I only got him it as we are replacing the carpets this year so letting him get it out of his system before the new carpets are laid

Dd is obsessed with the stuff keeps her busy for hours. We don't have carpet so mess isn't 'too' bad. My biggest bugbear is she loves eating it so you have to watch her like a hawk or it all disappears.

If it does get onto a carpet use a car window ice scrapper when dry.

DC have had a lot of play dough it's evil stuff.

Playdough has always been a toy to be played at Grandma's until recently. I then discovered how easy it is to make it yourself and agree with the other poster who said this - just one colour so no mucky brown sludge mix!

Get trays with sides. Each child has a tray and their dollop of dough, make them sit on the floor with it. Don't leave completely unsupervised.
It is a pain, but less messy than paint and really ticks a lot of development boxes.

I used to love it when my eldest DD was younger it kept her quiet for hours. We just put a plastic cloth on the table and she never mixed the colours and I was quite smug that I was one of few parents that enjoyed it......Then came DS who once mixed the colours to brown in less than 5 minutes. He also managed to get it in the upstairs carpets and the rug even though they are nowhere near the playdoh playing area.
Needless to say I regrets my earlier smugness. I now hate the stuff with a passion.

I love it, and will happily 'keep DD company' while she plays. DD is only allowed to use it at the dining table (wipe clean wood veneer), I find she spreads it around less than when she does it on the (also wipe clean) floor, as she doesn't sit on bits and squish it! Then when she's done and tidied up i can sweep or vacuum the floor quickly (she stays on her chair or I carry her out of the room so the crumbs don't get walked around everywhere).

I did used to get twitchy about her mixing it up, but now that it is all brown, actually seeing how much enjoyment she gets from just playing with it and not worrying about the colours has relaxed me a little!

YANBU, PIL bought DS about £80 worth of play doh and accessories for play doh for part of his Christmas present (the shocking waste of money for the DC presents is a whole other thread in itself). He was bored with it after 20 mins and I am still finding bits everywhere.

I too cannot stand colour mix up and spent ages separating it back out.

My nearly 3 year old loves it and she also loves nipping little bits off to eat. I also get twitchy when she mixes it up.

YANBU - both my mine were giving it for Christmas from different people. Can't stand the stuff. DH deals with it as I can't stand the feel of it as well as the mess it makes.

It's been banned from our house for a couple years. I took all the accessories to the local orphanage. My youngest two sometimes bring it home from school at the end of the week (they can play with it in the garden) the labra-dustbin usually eats it if we don't catch him in time, he's pooed he rainbow. HAte the stuff!

I had play-dough as a kid. Until I got some squashed into the carpet and Mum went loopy. No more for me after that incident.

Play doh is the work of the devil. Got DS a load of playdoh stuff for Christmas and most of it is two hard for him him to use (the hairdressing set and ice cream set) I find it hard to push down so a two year old has no chance

DS got 5(!) sets for his birthday and Christmas presents from very kind friends and he loves it. I hate the bloody stuff already and DH has taken to cutting random bits out of the carpet despite having a mat down.

It should be banned for home use.

Echo what incogKNEEto says really. It can be fab stuff but don't bother buying any. I make my own and find it quite therapeutic actually.
I have a different method tho. Two parts Corn flour to one part cheap hair cinditionet. Smells amazing and feels delightful! So easy to make.
