To ask what incorrect or useless advice gets repeatedly doled out here?

Aside from the ubiquitous 'book a spa day and leave him to deal with the kids.' There are a few old chestnuts that get rolled out regularly despite them being useless or counterproductive.

Every time there's a thread on mislabeled goods, someone will come on to the thread, absolutely adamant that the shop have to sell at that mis-labelled price.

On debates about baby on board stickers, there will be people who will be adamant that they are recommended by or useful to the emergency services. As if a team of highly trained rescue team is going to think 'sod it, I can't see a garish daddy's little princess sticker, let's not bother checking in the back'.

Those are just mostly annoying, but I sometimes worry about poorly-informed blowhards merrily typing in bad advice without thinking of the consequences. The stock response to landlords dragging their feat over repairs: 'get a tradesperson in to do the work and then send the bill/get them to send the bill to the landlord'

  • Yeah because once you've explained that, no you don't actually own the house and you won't be actually paying them for the work or the materials, but instead will be forwarding the bill to a landlord who's shown no inclination to fix the problem so far, so in all likelihood they'll never see a penny, you'll have tradespeople fighting like rats in a sack to take on the job.

Even more daft and dangerous is the advice to 'withhold the rent and use the money to fix the problem' which puts some poor sod at risk of eviction.

And more than once, i've seen posters with mortgage arrears or negative equity being told to ' hand back the keys to the mortgage provider and walk away' as if thebank or building society are then going to think 'yeah fair dos' forget about the mortgage debt.'

I hope to God no one has taken this useless and at times dangerous advice at face value!

The 'you don't have flu if you can post on MN' bollocks Grin

Even though there are always posters who explain that this is not necessarily the case and that they have had it but still been able to move about.

I think the latest thread took all of about two comments before it happened!

Also telling posters that they must get financial documents together before they leave their husband - yes, it's useful but not actually necessary and in fact I have never known anyone to do it, and I have worked in family law!

Go to different solicitors and get a free half hour's consultation. I have a client paying back hundreds of pounds because she thought all solicitors did this and didn't check whether she was incurring fees until she received a bill.

I've seen loads of 'don't bother' types of advice that pauses me off.

'Don't bother complaining to the Council about noise - they won't do anything.' Really? Mine are excellent.

'Don't bother going to the police - they won't be interested in the fact that your Ex keeps phoning you.' Really? My local police had the Domestic Abuse Unit give him a warning which worked very effectively.

'Don't bother with the DCS - they're cheap.' Really? My son and I now receive child support, thanks to the CD S, who also took on the thankless task of dealing directly with the unpleasant Ex so I didn't have to.

That the police will deal with noise. They don't. Call Environmental Health.

Pretty much any advice given to anyone about their teeth.
It's an abscess, you need antibiotics.

The one where people go to A&E/GP/Tesco and refuse to move until something is done. Er, sure.

CaoNi yep, that really grinds my gears. They must think that adoption is like getting a cat from a rescue centre. Tour the children's home, select a child you like the look of and take it home. Job done.

There is also an overwhelming desire to give the same advice time after time on the Relationships board:

1 There's another woman (there may indeed be but the idea that men NEVER leave without something else lined up is not actually correct - perhaps he's leaving because he doesn't want to be with you any more)

2 He's abusive (again he may well be, but it's a phrase thrown out to deal with every situation - ultimately you have the right to leave a relationship for any reason and calling everything abusive just minimises the seriousness of the suffering of people who are being genuinely abused).

The vast majority of time people are told to go to or take their kids to A&E. No wonder the NHS can't cope anymore.

It's illegal to leave children at home alone below the age of 16.

It's safer to drag several toddlers across a forecourt to pay for petrol than leave them in the car because cars catch fire when their engines are off regularly.

Short of money? Buy a MN chicken! It'll feed a family of 4 for almost a week

YY to the free solicitor advice!

Also isn't there some controversy about posters on BF posts saying that the hind milk is the thicker stuff - I'm sure I have see the concept of fore milk and hind milk being debunked on here.

Just phone the police and have it logged - I think this was debunked as well

Report
LineyReborn · 30/12/2015 06:59

Oh God yes, 'have it logged'. Like the police have a special 'just in case' book next to the phone.

Not if he owns, co-owns, or is on the rental agreement of the house.

There is something in the foremilk/hind milk thing but they're not different types of milk which is often toted around online.
Kelly mom link explains quite well.
