AIBU?

Gift gone wrong

Just a quicky.

I have bought my Girfrliend a beautiful white gold necklace for Christmas, however I am 99% sure that the chain will be to short.

I didn't have enough money to buy a longer one but will after Christmas.

AIBU to buy her something she might not be able to enjoy on Christmas day?

How short is it? Does she have an unusually large neck?

You might find she has a chain she can put it on anyway. But otherwise as long as you tell her you will take her to get a chain in the new year then I wouldn't worry.

its an 18inch chain. She hasn't got a massive neck but she is a size 18.

I just worry it wont fall to the length she wants

Standard length is 16 inches I think.

How long is it?

She doesnt normally wear jewellery but has mentioned she would like a necklace. So she wont have another chain

I think it will be fine. (fingers crossed)

I'm bigger than your girlfriend and I wear 18inch chains no problem.

An 18 inch chain will fit. I'm a size 24 and my chains fit quite easily.

I have a stock of primark-tyoe chain bracelets that I use to make necklaces longer as needed for particular outfits. . Only cost a few quid, can you get something like that?

Sounds perfect to me.

You sound lovely and thoughtful, OP.

Totally fine.

She opens it, very happy, puts it on, you say "Is the chain length OK, or would you prefer it longer, I wasn't sure which length to get" she answers honestly, job's a good 'un.

How considerate of you! I think it will be fine but do what Nosquirrels said.

Just make sure she's not allergic to nickel.

I tried it around my neck and im smaller than her and its like a strangler! I have seen an extender chain in silver but it could look odd if it doesnt match.

You could buy a chain 'extender' for the necklace. Google 'necklace extender' and lots of options come up.

I use one for a tiny gold chain I wear occasionally, makes it fit nicely.

Maybe it's not a long term option though, unless you got one in the same metal.

Best wishes to you, sounds like a lovely and thoughtful gift.

Sorry x posted.

Depends on the style I guess as to whether it'll match, but still worth a try.

Id give it to her and say if its not long enough you can get it altered/changed or whatever. It sounds like a lovely gift I'm sure she will be happy with it.

I make jewellery and I'm a size 16. I get most of my chains as 18 inches. On slimmer women they hang at the top of the cleavage, on us not so slim the pendant hangs an inch or two above. Most larger ladies don't actually have necks that are massively bigger than slimmer ones. Just be ready to say you'll get a different chain in the new year if she does find it too short. Seriously though, I don't think there will be a problem. 18 inches is the most common length.

No, just use the extender so she can wear it Christmas day but tell her you will get the longer chain after Christmas.

Maybe get a gold coloured extender? Argos do them I think.
