Halal meat

This is not supposed to cause conflict but I am genuinely confused as to why it's controversial anymore?

People keep talking about how it's cruel but I know in this country all animals have to be stunned in order to be killed whether they are halal or not.

So what am I missing? Why do people keep boycotting it?

i have no idea sometimes people like too protest and feel indignant about stuff i dont purposefully go out to buy halal meat but i eat eat if its there.

I don't get it either - the same people who bang on about it don't seem to care about Kosher meat - which is 100% unstunned

On my side, I just do not want any of the money I paid to go toward funding an Imam. As it is necessary that the food is prayed over, either it is a recording, or an actual guy that comes, prays, and get paid for it (I have actual experience of that).
So no, as much as I can, I refuse to eat or buy halal.

Isn't it just mainly rampant islamaphobia dressed up as animal welfare concerns? Most people I know who whinge on about this are not vegetarian or vegan, but a surprisingly large portion are a leetle bit racist.

I don't know. I have to admit I am not fond of Islam. I consider and respect Muslims as much as any other person, I just do not like their religion. Does that make me a racist? Nope, because Islam is not a race, it is an ideology. And you are not morally obligated to respect or like an ideology.

Fairy - is that right about the meat having to be stunned? I assumed that to be the case to and as such have no problem with Halal meat. I also assume (maybe wrongly) that in order to be Halal the welfare standards of the animals are higher?

I'm perfectly happy to eat Halal meat. It doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Yep it's the law over here. The animals have a right to die without pain and are stunned. It's not nice to see and it can give the illusion they are still alive as their nerves will still spasm but it's stun, hang, slit. It's the procedure in most factories. My dh works in an abattoir that supply a popular supermarket and a popular restaurant. That is how the pigs and cows are slaughtered.

there was a thread on here a while back and some posters were worried supermarkets were going to bring halal meat in by stealth i live in a area which has a fairly high muslim population the local asda has an halal aisle its clearly marked halal so people can choose wether to buy it or not people have some odd ideas

Yeah, it's stunned like non-halal, non-kosher meat is.

Now Kosher meat, that I do have a problem with (not stunned).

Halal meat has been served in local schools without parents knowledge, let alone consent.

There has been a few reports in the media about Sussex, some about Surrey, but not many. I don't want to give details, but let's just say that being involved with the board of governors gave me more information than I wanted.

I do not live in a muslim country, so I object to be served meat killed according to Islam. Multiculturalism for me means that we are happy to accept other believes and way of lives (within reasons), not that we have to change our own traditions and ways of lives.

I should add that I don't exactly agree with the way we farm and slaughter our food, but 2 wrongs never make a right!

I think what zippy is trying to say is that killing animals for meat is pretty brutal fullstop.

I do want my animals to be stunned before they are killed (unless there is a humane alternative) and as such i would always insist on British meat because i am not sure the welfare requirements in the EU are so stringent. This would apply to halal and non halal meat.

I eat all meat. I really like meat. I am absolutely indiscriminate when it comes to food.

On occasion, I have found myself having to buy a Kosher turkey or two for friends who are Jewish (that are coming for Thanksgiving). I have never spent more on meat than I have on a Kosher turkey.

It was a delicious Turkey, but a Halal Butterball Turkey would have been just as nice.

To me though, a turkey is a turkey is a turkey. Cant we all just eat what we want? Why do there have to be sooo many rules over these poor dead animals we're going to spice, marinate and cook? It's all going to be shit in the morning anyway.

No, its not always stunned. There is a halal meat shop near where I live which says on the door "unstunned halal". SOME halal meat is given a very weak stun, but most of it isn't stunned. I'm a vegetarian so don't eat any meat, but halal seems to me to be far worse than stunned meat. Of course, a lot of non-halal animals aren't stunned properly either, as recent slaughterhouse investigations showed. 90% of Halal meat in the UK is now stunned. That figure may be higher now, I know that as a supplier of livestock I, and many other farmers I know, will not knowingly send beasts to slaughter unless we are assured of stunning.
Some of my animals end up Halal and many don't. I'm as confident of the welfare of the Halal beasts as I am of the non Halal. I care for the animals I raise from birth to slaughter and it doesn't bother me one iota that a prayer tape is played whilst some of them leave the world.

I find myself checking takeaway food shop windows for the halal sign. As some of them only supply a certain chicken as halal only. If you have not noticed the sign then you are not free to make the choice. I don't want to eat halal meat as is my choice. I don't want it put upon me as I do not worship Islam. Can feel a flaming on its way!
