Ok I am having a moan, having a tough time at the minute and missed a parcel earlier and nearly missed my Chinese! Have now stuffed my face and feeling a bit better but I need a grumble!

I live in a town house, it's lovely I really love my home and I've been upstairs onthe third floor as home alone and not feeling very well.

I also have shock horror a doorbell! The doorbell has a light so on approaching the door you can see it even at night

Nearly everyone who comes here doesn't ring the doorbell - why?

My postman knocked first - explained to him so he knows to ring the doorbell now (he's on holiday hence missing the stand in postman)

Ive missed two tesco deliveries in the past because of them knocking - can hardly here it in the living room

Tonight the take away driver didn't ring the doorbell then had a go at me because he was cold because I left him waiting for five minutes

AIBU to get a really big flipping sign or arrow to stick on my front door! Saying end the flipping bell

I mean honestly you would ring the doorbell - why would you not ring the doorbell especially after no answer on the knock - One person told me they didn't want to disturb me too much... Wtf I said but I've ordered this food.... Arrrrggghh

Gosh that felt good :)

I know a lot of people that don't like to ring doorbells. I don't either, but I think it's because I find them really irritating and just assume (wrongly) that other people do as well

Oh. I have the opposite problem, in that everyone rings our doorbell, always at nap time, and wakes up my daughter.

Postmen do it (with parcels for other people in my building). Friends and family do it even when I've asked them minutes beforehand not to (and they've agreed!). Randomers do it by mistake. EVERYONE STOP RINGIN' MY DOORBELL

I have a door knocker and yet a lot of delivery people use the letterbox to knock which I often miss as it just sounds like a leaflet got delivered or something. Confused

Yes it 100% works... Because when I was moaned at I said oh is the doorbell not working and then said oh it is working Hmm I also tested after I missed the parcel

I can't hear if someone knocks simple as that it's so so annoying!!

I have the opposite problem I live in a block of flats. I have to lift phone press buzzer- hang up phone- wait for them to reach landing -lift phone -press buzzer- replace phone
Then the get to the door bell before I get to the door and the ring it!! I know you are here I've had to get up and answer the phone twice. Wait 5 seconds for me to reach door.

Yes, try a sign. This baffles me too.

We get people knocking instead of ringing as well, but we can usually hear the knocking. I know the bell works too. DC like ringing it when we come home, and I can definitely hear it from outside the closed front door when they ring it.

I'm with you OP, lot's of delivery people bang on the door, why?

Bang if you like but ring as well, it's quicker than writing out a card to tell me I'm out.

I've always wondered why people knock when there is a door bell. I must admit sometimes I ring a doorbell and if I don't actually hear it ring i wonder if it's working so would probably wait a while and then knock, but I'd always try the bell first.
Our Avon lady always knocks - on the glass. My memories of the Avon advert was 'ding dong Avon calling' so I find it ironic that she knocks when there's a bell Grin

Lol at the Avon lady...

It was the driver who said about not disturbing that I found so weird you have an hour slot your obviously expecting a delivery! Hmm

Bonkers

Feeling your pain on this.

I don't know what is wrong with people. I don't have a door bell. I have a big and obvious knocker but people still either rattle the letter box flap or hammer their fists on the actual door. Both equally annoying, and baffling when there is a very nice knocker available.

sinber · 05/12/2015 20:09

What's even worse is when the first sound you hear is the click of the letterbox when the card is pushed through telling you you're out, and they haven't rung or knocked. You get to the door just in time to see the van disappearing.

I am a nanny, I always knock at doors as I don't want to wake napping children or children who are up in bed.

Sometimes I wish our postman would ring the bell - as I have a newborn and toddler at work and if they're both down for a nap - I really want it to stay that way and unfortunately my postie delivers at this time of day :)

Report
ExplodingCarrots · 05/12/2015 20:11

Yep this happens to me too! The posties knock because they know I got toddler dd and don't ring the bell in case they wake her from a nap, which is considerate but there's been times I havnt heard because they knock so quiet.

Our postman goes for the triple whammy - we get the porch door thumped violently, then the bell then back to the thumping. Scared the living crap out of me the first time it happened.

I can kind of see the logic there... But you likely know there are children

In the morning or for an expected thing... Nope ring my blooming doorbell!!!

I think people do assume the doorbell doesn't work for some reason. Delivery drivers here always hammer the door down rather than ring one of our 2 doorbells. Hmm

TheExMotherInLaw · 05/12/2015 20:35

Ha - we had this - good, loud doorbell, pathetic little knocker - so they used the knocker, of course. We ended up removing the doorbell, and replacing the knocker with a great heavy one we can hear.

Same here. Does my head in.

Woman was banging on my door tonight. I had to find keys, unlock it etc. Opened it and she just looked at me and said "Chinese?" "Nope," I said. Apparently she didn't see the house number next to the doorbell she also ignored so she then stropped about waiting at the wrong house!

celtictoast · 05/12/2015 20:48

YANBU. If people have a doorbell it's obviously there for a purpose, otherwise why put it there? And why assume it doesn't work without even lifting a finger to try it?

Report
Picnic2223 · 05/12/2015 20:52

The people with sleeping children, or that are annoyed by door bells why don't you just take then down.

Op I used to live in a town house with the exact same problem, I assume if the occupant had a door bell they prefer you to use it.
