...to wish that 3 particular words would vanish from mumsnet forever.

They only ever seem to be used to diminish and try to shut down discussion. To deflect from somebody's argument without addressing it, and to try to make the other person look irrational and/or mean spirited, or to characterise their point as an overreaction, however moderately it's been been put. They are the polemical equivalent of playing the player not the ball.

The words are froth/frothing/frothers, sneer/sneery/sneering and hate/haters.

Will Nyone join me in. Moratorium?

IamTheWhoreofBabylon Sat 28-Nov-15 09:58:52

Can we include HTH
Usually used in a passive aggressive way by a prat

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe Sat 28-Nov-15 10:00:54

I would add 'entitled' to that list.

Bettercallsaul1 Sat 28-Nov-15 10:09:11

Agree, and would also include "sanctimonious", which crops up reliably on certain threads and is particularly unpleasant, with its undertones of assumed superiority and piety. Agree that we should address the argument, not the arguer, and keep emotive words to a minimum.

Crazypetlady Sat 28-Nov-15 10:10:45

I still don't understand what HTH means.
The word vacuous, it is so sneery wink

manicinsomniac Sat 28-Nov-15 10:12:33

I agree with frothing. Not so bothered about the others.

My least favourite words/phrases on mn:
judgy pants
cunt
DH
ODFOF
Fuck off to the far side of fuck and when you get there fuck off some more
hands OP a grip
pearl clutching
chavvy
scroungers

manicinsomniac Sat 28-Nov-15 10:13:30

* ODFOD

BanningTheWordNaice Sat 28-Nov-15 10:14:18

Naice :D

Bettercallsaul1 Sat 28-Nov-15 10:14:41

I actually think "entitled" has been used so often on MN that it's become almost meaningless.

WorraLiberty Sat 28-Nov-15 10:15:14

'Menz' needs to go too.

As soon as someone types it, I immediately stop reading their post and scroll straight to the next one.

BrianCoxReborn Sat 28-Nov-15 10:15:18

"Special snowflake"

Fuck off.

The most ridiculous put-down I've ever heard

It's reminiscent of playground bullies trying ever so hard to be cool.

AlisonWunderland Sat 28-Nov-15 10:15:32

I'm not keen on narcisstic. Vastly overused, normally inaccurately.

AlisonWunderland Sat 28-Nov-15 10:16:28

I don't even like it when it's spelt correctly!

liptolinford Sat 28-Nov-15 10:17:32

Can we ban the word 'vile' too?

plantsitter Sat 28-Nov-15 10:18:39

I hate special snowflake too. Sounds like it's moving anyone who might not want to do EXACTLY what everyone else does.

Also, teachers, with you're taking about any given student PLEASE for the love of Marjorie can you use some other name than 'little Jonny'. Nobody is called Jonnyb any more. You sound like Joyce Grenfell, only not funny.

manicinsomniac Sat 28-Nov-15 10:20:56

oh yes, definitely naice and menz too. Special snowflake, I quite like.

Samcro Sat 28-Nov-15 10:21:05

PO please
and PC usually used to put down the sn community

BertrandRussell Sat 28-Nov-15 10:21:24

Now I'm going to flounce (se what I did there)?

You're supposed to be talking about my words, not adding yours! grin

BackInTheRealWorld Sat 28-Nov-15 10:22:17

What does special snowflake mean, I've not seen that one used?

multivac Sat 28-Nov-15 10:25:46

Yes to 'entitled'.
Also 'grabby'. And 'brat'.

'Give your head a wobble' is vile (sorry, liptolinford !)

"YABU. You sound entitled and grabby and your child is a brat. Give your head a wobble."

explodes

Birdsgottafly Sat 28-Nov-15 10:26:55

I'd like at least a months ban on, controlling, grabby and entitled.

I'd like a lifetime ban on "Sociopath", no they really aren't and says much more about the poster than the person they are labelling.

Arfarfanarf Sat 28-Nov-15 10:28:44

My three words would be "mumsnetters are hypocrites"

This idea that we are a hive mind is ridiculous.

On thread 1 people said A but hang on, here we are on thread B and youre all saying the opposite. You HYPOCRITES.

Erm no dear. Its not the same posters on both threads. Different people expressing their own opinions are not hypocrites. Someone get you a dictionary stat and beat you to death with it

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe Sat 28-Nov-15 10:28:53

I quite like Give your head a wobble.

I really dislike all the <hands op a grip>/ do you want me to get a grip from the grip shop/do you need a spare grip I have one here somewhere and all other unfunny grip related 'jokes'.

WorraLiberty Sat 28-Nov-15 10:31:08

Oh and TOXIC needs to go!

"My family are toxic"

I always picture them sitting down to dinner, wearing radio active suits.

Arfarfanarf Sat 28-Nov-15 10:31:35

Thread 2

So busy FROTHING grin that i got myself all mixed up
