He'll be 3 next month! What do 3yr olds play with? He's growing out of his toddler stuff but I've no idea what to move on to. Everything seems themed - paw patrol, batman, Spider-Man etc etc. He's just started to watch the odd episode of paw patrol but j wouldn't say he's interested enough to go out and stock up on all the tat!! Please help....,

Does the toddler stuff include Brio? We loved Brio.

Otherwise, Duplo. The Duplo fire engine was a truly magnificent Christmas present, we spent the whole of Christmas morning putting it together and it was a favoured plaything for a long time.

We got a scuttlebug for DD when she was 3. Otherwise with both DCs the main things that have been popular are roadmat rug and toy cars, wooden train track and those big sets of different size /colour wooden bricks. DS still plays with those now and he will be 8 in March! They also both liked their toy farm and tractors.

Dressing up kit - doesn't need to be character it could be pirate / doctor etc

Paw Patrol seems quite popular with littlies at the moment dd 5 and my mindees 4 and 3 are all mad on it. Brio or Big jigs wooden railways are always a winner, Happyland from ELC also good.

ELC happyland playsets for imaginitive play, brio or bigjigs train set, anything from Orchard Games. A road-layout playmat or table.

Mine (2.9 and 4.11) have this and think it's tremendous.

DS2 is 3 in early january. He likes trains and pretend cooking so Christmas is a small play kitchen and as he already has a mountain of wooden train stuff he will probably have some Thomas stuff for his birthday. No decisions til we see what his Christmas presents from others are though.

Has he got a scooter or a balance bike? That's a logical option.

Playmobil! Tesco, Amazon and Argos do lots of Playmobil sets that are often reduced and they never seem to lose their appeal.

DS2 is almost 5 but had his first proper set at 3 and he plays with it constantly. Even DS1 (who is 10) loves it.

Duplo/mega Bloks he's really not fussed with. I'm hoping it'll come cos I wanna play Lego when he's older

Dressing up is a no go at the min. He wants to take it off within 5 mins, though I'm only going off the times we've been to fancy dress things and he's been the only one in civvies cos he wouldn't wear a costume unless it's bloody face paint which he'll quite happily ask for umpteen times a day

He has a bike which he got in summer (was grandparents Xmas pressie last year but we waited for the nice weather to get him something and it was a bike he wanted)

I'm gonna get sone more craft stuff which he loves. He loves stories too but I'm that obsessed with kids books he already has sooo many I don't think we need to add any more to his collection.

My 3yo DS had a tool bench for his birthday - wooden and £30 from Amazon. It's great. And cars - he loves them.

DD is 3.6 and loves her wooden train track/trains. We have big jigs stuff plus she's getting some wooden Thomas and friends trains to go with it for Christmas.

My ds is 3 and loves playmobil, duplo, wooden train set and character toys like fireman Sam and paw patrol. If we had space I'd get him a kitchen/shop/theatre type thing as he's getting into role play. Medical kit and tea set are also popular come to think of it. Play tent, aquadoodle, play doh.

Also Brio - both DD and DS had it and played for years - DS 14 still sometimes does!!

I also loved it and we could play together or with friends. ELC do a cheaper version which was good for the basic bits.

Battery telephone with big buttons and noises. DS loved it. And fire engines!!

My DS has just turned 4 but for his 3rd birthday he had the following:

Books
Thomas Take and Play sets (for his existing trains)
Playmobil Fire Engine
Playmobil builder set
Builder's set (some little plastic tools, hi viz vest, hard hat and goggles)
Some JCB/Caterpillar diecast vehicles
Jigsaw puzzles
Gruffalo soft toys
A nice Joules hoody!

He still plays with all of them (his hoody is too small now though, sadly!) but his absolute favourite is the Playmobil fire engine though. On his Christmas list this year (dictated to his big sister) is the ladder unit fire engine and as he was leafing through an old Playmobil catalogue this evening, he heaved a great sigh and exclaimed rather wistfully, "I wish I had a fireman set." So It's still a big favourite!

Oh, and he plays constantly on an old toy keyboard that one of my daughters had for their 3rd birthday one year. Every day he carts it about to whichever room I'm in, to serenade me with electronic muzak. It's delightful

For Christmas he's getting a tool bench and dinosaurs. Would he like board games? Ds recently got hungry hippos and snap cards and he's loving them!

It's an awkward age to buy for, I agree. Anything train or car related seems to go down a treat. My DS got given a VTech Toot Toot garage and bloody loved it. It's also when they start getting really imaginative, and he loved playing with a baby doll that he could cuddle and pretend to feed. Playing toy shops is also very popular in our house, so you could get toy food etc.

Brio train set played with by everyone from age 2 upwards. Even the teenagers enjoy 'helping' the little ones to build tracks of ever increasing complexity.

My 3 year old DS is getting playmobil castle, for his 3rd birthday (sept) he got the fire engine which he adores.

He also got a farm shed with animals which is a big hit.

If he likes craft stuff I highly recommend Baker Ross, they do all sorts of crafty stuff, he might be a bit young for it now, but in a year or two bakerross.co.uk will be your fave website

I'd take him into the Early Learnig Centre and see what he gravitates towards.
