ATM etiquette

When there is a queue, please have your card ready. I don't need to see you go through your wallet twice, all your trouser pockets and your jacket pocket before you find it in a different pocket somewhere on your person.

If you get to the machine and there is a queue, please be as quick as you can. No need to check your card twice, your girlfriends card and then your card again. That notice isn't going to change. There is no money in your bank.

If there is a queue for only one machine when there are two, don't sigh, tut and walk over to the other machine and swear loudly when you realise it is out of order. We are not queuing for the fun of it.

Surely I am not unreasonable to expect this?? Any more rules I can add.

Do not stand 0.5 cm behind me. Being uncomfortably close will not make the queue move any faster.

SauvignonBlanche Sat 21-Nov-15 15:41:10

Don't stand on top of each other.

sonjadog Sat 21-Nov-15 15:44:40

Actually I think it is fair enough that people do more than one thing when they reach the top of the queue. If someone wants to check two cards, do you think they should queue twice? I don't so.

But people do need to stabd back. I will tell people to back off if they are close.

Don't stand behind a woman with her 2 children who are learning how to use a cash machine and quite excited about using their cash cards for the first time, tut, swear and mumble to your wife about people taking ages when there are blatantly about 5 empty cash machines around in this banking area of the shopping centre and not expect her to turn round and ask you exactly what your problem is!

spritefairy Sat 21-Nov-15 15:45:31

Oh one more. When you have finished, move to the side to inspect your receipt.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Sat 21-Nov-15 15:49:33

If there is a person using an ATM, a gap of a metre or so, and then a line of people it is a queue for the machine.

If you go and stand in the gap, this jumping the queue nothing will be said because we are British but we shall judge ...

If there is a queue and you need cash, join the queue. Do not walk around for half an hour looking for a cash machine that doesn't have a queue. This request is specific to my DH.

MultishirkingAgain Sat 21-Nov-15 15:53:59

And if there are 2 machines next to each other, there is ONE queue. It's quickest and fairest.

anothermakesthree Sat 21-Nov-15 16:04:39

And don't smoke while using the machine....it makes the small area stink!!!

GabiSolis Sat 21-Nov-15 16:15:35

Agree with all except having the card ready and moving to the side to inspect the receipt. Some people are not comfortable standing in the street with their purse out or card in hand, so to me it's no big deal for them to get that out when they get to the cashpoint. Wrt the receipt, some cashpoints don't seem to give you your balance until you see it on the receipt so it's understandable that they might want to check their balance at this point to see if they need to do anything else.

Erm how about letting people do their business in the manner which is comfortable to them and not putting pressure on people for the sake of a few seconds...?

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes Sat 21-Nov-15 16:17:34

Control your children.

I'm sure you think it's adorable that they stand with me while I use it and watch what I'm doing and 'help' me take the money out but it's not. It's fucking annoying.

I've read Oliver Twist, btw. I know what's going on.

Anotherusername1 Sat 21-Nov-15 16:18:22

YY to this. Sames goes for tills/self-service tills in supermarkets. Well anywhere really. Don't take the mick and try to push in and then pretend you thought everyone was queueing for one till!

TaliZorah Sat 21-Nov-15 16:19:01

I agree

Starwarsorbaby Sat 21-Nov-15 16:20:47

Hmmm, I opened this thread not expecting it to be about cash machines confusedshock

Gruntfuttock Sat 21-Nov-15 16:58:00

Starwarsorbaby What else could it be about?

GruntledOne Sat 21-Nov-15 17:05:37

Some people are not comfortable standing in the street with their purse out or card in hand, so to me it's no big deal for them to get that out when they get to the cashpoint.

But why? What's the big deal? If you've got your card closed into your hand, it's not going to get nicked.

celtictoast Sat 21-Nov-15 17:09:32

Don't be impatient.

Starwarsorbaby Sat 21-Nov-15 18:32:11

Sorry to be crude, but ass to mouth blush guess it could warrant some etiquette?

Spilose Sat 21-Nov-15 18:37:59

shockgrin

Starwarsorbaby Sat 21-Nov-15 18:43:57

Was surprised it was in AIBU and not the sex thread to be honest!

Gwenhwyfar Sat 21-Nov-15 18:44:58

"When there is a queue, please have your card ready."

No, if I'm holding the card in my hand, it could be easily grabbed. Who made you queen of the ATM anyway?

Gwenhwyfar Sat 21-Nov-15 18:48:08

"If you've got your card closed into your hand, it's not going to get nicked."

It could be much more easily than somewhere in your wallet, somewhere in your bag.

mrssmith79 Sat 21-Nov-15 18:51:25

Starwarsorbaby I still snigger when I read 'DP' on here grin.

Back to the main point though, people who press for a receipt and then just walk off leaving it flapping in the breeze - will no one think of the trees!!
