To find neighbour's request entitled and rude

I moved into a council property a couple of months ago (maisonette, house turned into two flats). My upstair's neighbours own a taxi rank so take up all the available parking spaces directly outside the flat with 5 people carrier type taxis and 1 estate one, which means we have to park on the other side of the culdesac which has a massive grassy island in the middle of it. We struggled like hell to move our stuff in. I'm 32 weeks pregnant and have bad SPD so struggle walking far distances at the best of times, and I would love to be able to park outside my own home anyway.

One day there was a space infront of our flat because one of the taxis were being used and we had some more boxes to move in so it was ideal. I didn't think this would be a problem but the next morning we got a knock on our door. It was the upstairs neighour, he asked my OH to move his car so he could park his taxi outside. OH not wanting to get off on bad terms with new neighbours he moved his car. Now I am thinking what the hell. They can't tell us where we can and cannot park our car, especially when we're going to be lugging a child/travel system/loads of shopping out of it. I imagine he likes to park them there for security reasons but it's still really rude and inconsiderate of the other residents. The parking spaces aren't assigned to certain flats/houses but taking up all 6 spaces? Now that's just taking the piss. Please tell me i'm not BU.

YANBU. Park where you like.

How do you own a taxi rank? Surely they are defined by the council?

He owns several cars as part of a taxi business and expects to use all the spaces outside your flat?

I think even the most blithe 'it's a public road, people can park how they want' advocates might think this beyond the pale.

If it's a public road, you are entitled to park there. Tell him to do one if it happens again.

Are the council aware they are running a business from home? If they ask you to move again I would just say no.

So does he have permission to park work vehicles in a residential parking space? I would imagine there's a rule somewhere that he's breaking.

YANBU. Don't tolerate this anymore. I imagine the council would be very interested to hear about this taxi rank using residential parking spaces?!

I don't think they can do that. My neighbour seemed to think he could park all of his cars he was fixing up in every available space outside the house and the council rode his arse repeatedly until he stopped.

You could report them for it if you wanted.

Of course YANBU but more fool your OH for moving the car.

I'd park wherever I like in a public road if there is space. If he knocks again, I would tell him it a public road.

He told me he owns the taxi rank and they all have his name on, it isn't a local one i've heard of or seen a rank in town for so i imagine he is running it from home. It's hard to get a space as they're rarely ever in use other than weekends, i suppose he's not getting much business. He is literally just using the spaces as some sort of place to store them all. I'll get in touch with the council about it as it will become a problem when the baby is here.

He needs permission to do this. Does he have it?

One of mums neighbours owned a gardening business and the road was always blocked with vans.

Mum complained to the council who confirmed he had no permit and shouldn't be using it as a yard. Around the same time one of the vans was reversed into and the insurance wouldn't pay out either. The neighbour sold up and moved to where could ah ran actual yard for the vans.

Yanbu your neighbour is being a twat.

He's bullshitting you. Please do ask the Council to advise you where you can park - should be interesting.

Bloody right get in touch with the council.

Any person that is comfortable with watching you and your dh struggle while taking up all 6 spaces, is an arrogant arse of the highest order!

Phone the council to check his story. Sounds like bobbins to me.

I agree, report him to the council.

A shop on my high street recently got their planning permission to become a cab office, turned down.

The reason was because the council said it would cause parking problems in the local streets.

I love a good parking thread so I am shamelessly marking my place.

Fuck that .. Park where you like .. He can't have all the spaces to himself! Tell the council if it's a council property..

TheNumberfaker · 17/11/2015 14:46

Does he own a taxi business? He can't own a rank? Agree with everyone else that you need to call the council to clarify what the proper use of the parking spaces is.

I'll get on to the council asap, thanks for the advice everyone! I'm not sure on the taxi world lingo but i'm pretty sure he said rank to me.

There are taxi ranks - parking spaces on the ground - and taxi businesses. It sounds like your neighbour owns a taxi business and wants to park all his business cars in the residential parking.

Your neighbour is more than likely bullshitting you. Get proper advice from the council about parking locally - it sounds v unlikely that the parking outside your flat is an actual taxi rank at all.

DowntonDiva · 17/11/2015 14:58

I have a taxi driver in the family, (black cab) - a rank is a designated area and it will be clear as day with road markings and a sign. Your neighbour is being a chancer. But in your situation I probably would have moved the car then kicked myself later.

Yanbu - he's an old fashioned selfish shellfish who thinks he owns the road. Definitely ask the council for advice on this.

I'm American and in the US the parking spaces would be called the rank and the actual cars a taxi fleet. I'm sympathetic; we live in a community of terraced houses with limited parking. Our house is in a cul-de-sac with more parking than other buildings have, and we have had several instances of people who own businesses parking their large trucks and commercial vans in front of our house at night and on weekends. It's illegal and we were able to get it stopped, but it took a while and was a hassle. Good luck, OP.

It doesn't sound like a very successful business if the cars never move.

He's running a business from home which he may or may not have a permit to do but the parking spaces are either
designated as residential - so he can bog off
leased to him by the council - should be in your housing agreement but I'd expect them to be marked in some way as leased to X business.
public parking - in which case he can bog off
