not a thread for opinions, debate, arguments, just to offer solidarity and condolences if you wish.

Why? What good will some mawkish 'public mourning' do?

I agree with cao

The thread about Parisian mumsnetters has covered this base and evolved naturally rather than dictated by you

You can ask what you like. If people feel the need to be vicarious then they can join you; but you will still get the wrath of the thread police who will welcome the opportunity to have a pop. Personally I think it is a waste of time, and I'm not into recreational greiving but if it makes you feel good, go ahead.

As long as there is one for Beirut as well, or do we not bother about those 41 people who also lost their lives that awful day?

Friday was a terrible day, I cannot imagine how the people of France or Lebonan are feeling at the moment, however sitting on an internet forum writing 'RIP' is honestly redundant at this point.

Won't happen.

Is there a condolences thread for the 147 people massacred at Garrissa University in Kenya on Thursday?

Anyway, agree with Mrs GB, writing RIP on an internet forum is redundant in all atrocities that has occurred in the world this past week.

For all atrocities

I would, but i feel condolences are empty words that make no difference to anyone.

Imo, my sympathy, fear and general upset dont need to be said, i assume that every decent person in the world feels for every person murdered for nothing, in france, beirut, flying home from egypt, or Syria.

Good idea op.
I went into London last night & it was so good to see the London Eye lit up in the French colours ( as indeed were many other landmarks/ buildings i )

Solidarity to the people of France.

corlette that was in April, not last week

Hmm OP's previous thread on the refugee crisis (even though she insists on her right to call it a 'migrant' crisis) gives some clue as to where she's coming from with all this.
So you can count me out of this pointless 'look at me and my humanitarian concern' fest thanks all the same. I think a little time spent looking inwards might benefit you more OP.

Adding daily deaths in Syria and Iraq to the condolences list.

Paris is not the only place people are dying..

I thought this was a thread to express condolences to the people of France?
If you want to start a thread for the people of Kenya or Syria ( or anywhere else ) then start one.
France are our neighbours & I have visited the country many times, I therefore have much more of a connection with France than I have with Kenya.

corlette · 15/11/2015 09:33

savage indeed it was.
There was a report about it last week on Thursday. Apologies for not being clear.

Japan and Mexico had earthquakes... bombings in the Lebanon... 4 dead in a plane crash in Somerset... funeral bombed in Baghdad...suicide bomb in Beirut... that's 15,200 deaths in one day just in that little list.

Would you like to start a thread for all of them? Wallow in maudlin maunderings of conspicuous displays of grief, or would you like to do something more life affirming?

Your first mistake was posting this in AIBU.

Typing any words of condolence, pity, sympathy, empathy or any emotion you care to express onto forum, reddit, FB or twitter doesnt do a damn thing for anyone. All it really does is fuel you're own selfish ego in the hope that people agree and think what a wonderful person you are.

Writing a well thought out and rational letter to your MP is the bare minimum of action a single person can take. Other ways to help would be to donate what you can to an aid organisation etc.

Personally, I think the best thing we could all do is continue to live our lives with our heads held high. Change no plans and give no quarter to the terror they're trying to instill.
If you give into their terror, become fearful of living, they have won. If you continue to live with your head held high, they lose.

Do you feel that way about all the people who covered their Facebook photo with a rainbow in support of gay marriage?
Was that pointless?

Report
OurBlanche · 15/11/2015 10:29

Yes, Surfer. But only because I don't see what the problem is with gay marriage, so my support comes from a default position rather than a deliberate thought or act.

Like Seeyou, my usual response to such shit is not to let it change the way I live. Despite having been evacuated from shops, barricaded into one section of town, stopped and spoken to as a teen and for one unforgettable day having lost contact with DH (he was on a rooftop in London in 2005) it becomes necessary to refuse to change.

I always admired my grand mothers for how they lived through WWII, their mindset is, I think, essential.

I carry on - I went into London last night & visited crowded bars & a restaurant. I will never let terrorists 'win' - but in my own small way I also want to show my solidarity & support to France. I've changed my FB photo & I've posted on this thread, that's basically it. I don't really know what more I can do apart from trying to join the SAS & hunting down Isis members.
& I'm very sorry to hear of your experiences.

And today, do we shed tears for those who died in the bombings whose numbers are not even counted? They have little access to medical care as the city has been cut off and now apparently

Report
OurBlanche · 16/11/2015 15:58

I cannot spare a thought for any of them today.

I learned via facebook that a childhood friend has died.

He wasn't even 50. Fit, health and got married in September after a whirlwind romance.

I am hundreds of miles, 35 years and a lifetime away from him, but I have sobbed for much of the day.

For today the world can go to hell in a handbasket!
