Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Is it not feeding delusions to a degree. I'm not sure everything going on there is light-hearted.

It makes me anxious too. I hide all threads on the subject. In fact I will probably hide this one, too, before a load of people come on to post that yes, there is a need to prep because x/y/z terrifying reason.

Me too. I'm a fairly sane, somethimes rational, woman; but it has me pondering how many tins of soup could see me through an apicolypse. Or whether I'd be better stocking up on something to kill us quickly.

OP I don't think there is a real need, no. I mean it's always worth having some food in the cupboard in case you lose your purse or something but I think that's about it.
I certainly don't have bottled water stored, it's never occurred to me to be honest.

It's scary threads keeps popping up in chat about how an imminent flu pandemic is upon us, and infering everyone who doesn't have a thousand gallons of water, beans and candles is set to die a slow and painful death.

Well i'm fucked if there is a need. No space to store or grow. No money to gather up stuff.

As has been said, prepping has been going on forever. Tbh i think its a hobby. Some people take their hobbies very seriously. I would treat the prepper board in the same way as i treat the craft board- i ignore them.

I'm the opposite, being able to plan for any kind of disaster helps my stress. So many things go on where you're not in control, it's a fab hobby for that.

But seriously just hide the whole board, it's new and a bit of a novelty.

Cannot believe Mumsnet, with it's ridiculous number of talk topics already, now has a new topic devoted to this extremely niche subject.

If you live in a place where supplies might be cut off, surely one THREAD, would suffice for a discussion on how to prepare and cope with it?

I am truly bamboozled that a separate talk board has been created for this tiny thing.

My grandparents used to do this but they lived through WW2 and rationing.

My parents keep stocks of bottled water in the house since there was a problem with the local water supply a couple of summers ago which turned the tap water yellow and not safe to drink.

If it makes people feel safer to have supplies in the house then more power to them but the reality is that if something happened to make such supplies necessary then we would all be buggered within days probably - stocks of batteries and toilet rolls or not.

I think there are two things that get confused.

One is the quite sensible idea of always keeping a couple of days worth of food in the house just in case of things like heavy snowfall. However some people do seem to bring up the fuel crisis of about 15 years ago, which I recall well. All that happens was the supermarkets ran out of fresh bread and milk.
I think there is a difference between town and country dwellers on this front, I think it is a lot more worth while being prepared in the country.

The second is the panic that the world is ending and if you don't have 3 months of food in your house then you are a bad parent.

I saw one thread where people were saying they wouldn't share food with anyone else in the event of a major disaster. The level of paranoia on the thread was quite worrying.

Unlike press scare stories, The Evening Standard used to be terrible for stories of doom!
