My MiL has just dropped by and given me a freshly caught (this afternoon) trout. What in fresh hell am I supposed to do with it?!?

I love my MiL and was very appreciative but all the time thinking wtf?!? Tbf she is lovely and is never very odd. Just thought this was quite random.

So wise MNers what the hell do you do with a random trout?

Freeze it for another day or cook it tomorrow?

If you don't want it can I have it?

Did she gut it for you?

Has she gutted it for you? If not I think you need to clean it, then put it in the fridge, then google "whole trout recipe". V v easy to cook - don't worry.

Freeze it.

I love trout but would hate gutting it.

You tube? Or ring her to come round and show you how to gut it. This has made me smile....so random.

Easiest thing to do once gutted and cleaned

Tin foil
Fish
Lemon slices inside stomach cavity
Wrap up fish in a bag type affair with the tin foil
Cook it for about 20mins or so

Other variations of stomach filling:

Ginger, chilli and garlic
Herbs of choice
Cherry tomatoes (better if just thrown in the tin foil bag)

I would be thrilled to be given a freshly caught fish for dinner!

Even happier if they'd gutted it for me first.

Fry it in butter with smoked streaky bacon pieces, thyme and mushrooms.

Yes its gutted (I think) though it has its head and tail. I have no idea how to cook fish. Looked online and every recipe seems like ots out of master chef. Also everyone calls for wine which I can't have (dry alcoholic so don't even put stuff in the food) any ideas?

Your right it's pretty random. How long do they keep in the freezer for?

For the ones I suggested put a knob of butter in if you want but the fish steams in its own juices usually

Stuff it with fresh herbs and a couple of wedges of lemon, but if butter and seasoning on top then wrap in foil and cook. It will keep in the freezer for a couple of months if you cba to do anything today or tomorrow

ProfGrammaticus · 07/11/2015 21:17

What Asteria said. No need for wine!

I think for cooking you can use Apple Ju

Gut it, clean it, cook it and eat it.
Check youtube for a short video on how to gut a trout. It's dead easy.

I took my two younger ones fishing recently...they caught three trout between them and were delighted to have it served up for their dinner.

sorry - pressed post too soon. I meant to write that you could use apple juice instead of wine in recipes (my iPhone keeps capping up Apple for some reason...Hmm)

Aw. My Great Grandad used to keep everyone in fresh trout in their freezer. He taught me how to fish (and gut) too. Urge for trout tomorrow now!

Can I have your mil? Though I'd need a couple more else the dc would complain at being left out.

Cooked over a wood fire is rather good.

Why are you so Hmm? It's fish; as fresh it could possibly be. Not a dog turd.

ApocalypseNowt · 07/11/2015 21:48

Did she catch it herself? I'm imaging her standing on your door step dripping wet with it between her teeth then dropping it at your feet. Like a cat.

Not sure why you think that's strange, but you could just cook it simply with butter, lemon and maybe a bit of parsley? Oven in foil at about 180 degrees for 20 minutes or so, depending on size.
