She doesn't drink every day but she binge drinks like this probably once a month.

She doesn't remember various texts she sent while drunk this time. Horrible texts (not to me - to someone else).

I'm concerned but also annoyed with her. She is acting like this is all fine - just a blip apparently.

That is an incredible amount to drink in one go. I'm surprised she didn't end up in casualty.

You are right to be concerned.

ImperialBlether · 02/11/2015 11:30

Blimey, that's about 25 units!

Re. the 10 vodkas, how were they measured?

Does she not realise she has a problem? Surely the backlash of the nasty texts should tell her something's wrong with her behaviour?

WhataRacquet · 02/11/2015 11:30

There is nothing that can be done to help people like her unless she wants to stop drinking.

AlwaysHope1 · 02/11/2015 11:31

Yes that is very concerning and sounds like a binge drinker. I'm also surprised that she didn't get seriously ill. If she doesn't see it as a problem then she is in denial.

AdoraBell · 02/11/2015 11:32

I'd be out cold on the half that amount of wine, never mind the vodka too.

YANBU to be concerned. Are you close enough to find out why she does this and persuade her to get help if she can't stop on her own?

Report
FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 02/11/2015 11:41

Thanks everyone. I don't think she does realise it's a problem because it's not all the time - once in a while. But I am concerned something happens, yes. I.e. she injures herself or puts her personal safety at risk.

To be honest I think she does it because she just likes boozing.

She estimates the vodkas as ten shots ie measured by hand so it could be more

Oh my. I like a drink - had half a bottle of wine in on my own last night and a bottle on Friday over the course of dinner and junk TV watching - but that's an awful lot of alcohol. I think you are right to be worried about her - what if she vommed in her sleep or fell or tried to cook in that state - but unfortunately I don't know how you could tackle it with her.

Report
ImperialBlether · 02/11/2015 11:46

Well, ten home measures wouldn't be anything like ten pub measures. She should look at the amount missing from the bottle.

Is it just bravado, do you think? Surely she must know that if she's at the point where she can't remember what she's done, she needs to cut back?

Scarletforya · 02/11/2015 11:47

I hope she doesn't have children OP?

Report
FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 02/11/2015 11:48

No children - she lives alone.

Could be bravado, yes.

I'm not averse to a good old drink but that sounds prodigious. Home measures will most likely be triples too - probably over 50 units in one go. Scary. YA definitely NBU

if she drank that much and was able to send text messages and wasn't passed out vomiting or in a&e she must have a massive problem

has she always been like this or did something set ot off

"Don't want to seem a killjoy, but I am worried about you, love. It is incredibly bad for your liver to drink that much in one go. That much alcohol could kill you next time even if you are used to it- seriously. Record you drinks on Drink Aware. It's a hell of a lot."

FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 02/11/2015 12:04

She's always had this sort of tendency. She's the sort of person who doesn't tend to go for just a couple of drinks if you know what I mean. So she doesn't go out that much but if you do get her out its a massive bender. I like a drink but I get to a point and have to stop - she doesn't have that.

This weekend she fell out with someone she'd been kind of seeing which has resulted in this blip as she's calling it. I'm just can't get my head around having that much to drink while sat in the house alone.

That kind of all or nothing drinking would strongly indicate a propensity to alcoholism in my opinion.

Wow.

That really is a lot. If she's able to drink that in one go, I'd question her claim that she drinks such a lot only monthly. I'd not usually expect this from someone who drinks moderately every day and heavily a couple of times a week!

I agree r.e. backlash from nasty texts. I do hope it wasn't to someone who will for whatever reason stay quiet about it and enable her to keep thinking it's nothing. I don't know what to suggest, but without having to acknowledge consequences she'll never quite hit rock bottom but may still end up dead.

Report
FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 02/11/2015 12:12

I actually really don't think she drinks such a lot more often than she's saying. She doesn't hide her drinking.

So you will drink thirty units in one go, EatShitDerek? Can you remember what you've done the next day? Have you ever done something you shouldn't when you're drinking?

Report
FedUpWithJudgementalPeople · 02/11/2015 12:15

EatShit - she's a adult and entitled to spend her time how she wants, obviously.

However, I'm just worried about her. It seems a lot of booze.

For someone to have that kind of tolerance from drinking like that just once a month is fairly unusual. Are you quite sure it's that infrequent?

Agree RE the vodka measures. My DM drinks vodka and has an optic to measure it out. It's a 50ml measure, which to me is 2 singles, but DM classes it as 1 drink and doesn't realise why she's so drunk after having 5 or 6. Even 50ml doesn't look like much in the bottom of a glass though. F your friend is measuring by hand, chances are her measures are far more generous.

How do you know she doesn't? Have you checked her wheelie bin?

I think this is just the tip of the iceberg TBH.

FTR I was that person drinking heavily several times a week, who couldn't just have "a couple" so it was all or nothing. Still wouldn't combine mixing drinks and that amount of units of a night. I only say "needs consequences" because I have had to quit outright, and without consequences would still be doing it. While a problem drinker, I put a lot of energy into getting my friend, also an alcoholic, to accept that he had a problem. He did in fact have a problem, but so did I. She must think she's lucid when she sends these texts. Her observations on life may be accurate. The problem is that she doesn't recognise the harm in what she's doing. I disagree that she's not causing trouble, whether or not she's in danger.

Report
Sallystyle · 02/11/2015 12:16

She is in danger. Binge drinking like that is very dangerous.

I wouldn't fancy the risk of metabolic syndrome, liver damage and even kidney disease.

I can understand it a bit more if someone drinks that much on a night out or with friends but if you are drinking all that on your own something is very wrong.
