AIBU?

To ask what you'd think if a job advert stated: 'closing date 1 November'

ComposHatComesBack · 01/11/2015 23:47

Would you take that to mean job received on the 1 November will be considered or only applications received before 1 November will be considered?

Guess what I thought it meant and guess what the online application took it to mean?

Should I feel stupid or cross?

If the closing date is the 1st I would expect them to consider applications submitted on the 1st.

I'm guessing that's not what happened?

If there wasn't a time stated I might have checked... But I'd expect it to be either 12 noon or 5pm on 1 Nov.

Sorry OP :(

Closing date should indicate the last date that applications will be accepted. Seems ridiculous if they've stated a day later than will actually be accepted.

Yes I would consider it meant 'application accepted until 11:59 on Nov 1st'

I've never seen a job advert that gives a time before ...

So I would assume that any application made on the 1st would be acceptable.

You guessed right Mountain! Annoyingly I'd filled in most of the online form earlier in the week but needed to tweak the person spec section tonight, only to find I'd been shut out. Doubly annoying was the fact that the form was a swine to fill in and took hours to do.

Could you contact HR / line manager and ask if there is any opportunity to submit another way - you had IT issues etc.

MsJuniper · 02/11/2015 00:03

I agree with contacting them but be honest, say you understood the closing date to be inclusive.

I always put closing times on job ads, saves confusion.

pantry I've just done that and will await their response!

I have worked somewhere where we put a time on the closing date.

However, if you have just tried and it's bounced you out, you are awfully close to the 2nd November - is it possible the time hadn't changed on your system or theirs (the hour going back last weekend?).

Fiz I tried at around 9pm tonight. I also thought it was a bit odd the closing date was a Sunday.

Call them tomorrow and explain.

I would assume it meant November 1st was the final day for submissions, so any recieved on the 2nd would be void.

I always post a closing time as well as the date ..usually 5pm. Although the system will still accept it until midnight. I put 5pm so people have room for it to go wrong and still be accepted rather than call me at 9am monday telling me how they tried to do it at 11.57pm and their internet crashed or something

Agree, the closing date is 1st, therefore that's the last date. Good luck, hope it was a glitch.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Feel a mite less daft now. I double checked the as and there was no time specified.

also check the small print that may say we reserve the right to close applications if we have enough applications or some such. NHS jobs has this proviso which basically means if you see a job you fancy applying for do it ASAP.

Did you call them about it? It may have been a system glitch.

ComposHatComesBack · 02/11/2015 14:43

Yep, got an email response! It looks like it was an admin error and they should consider my application. Phew. I just need to digest their advice as it would seem the system won't let me continue with the application. It will be a faff, but better than the alternative.

Thanks everyone for the sound advice!

All submitted after a bit of tooing and froing with a very helpful woman in personnel. Thanks once again, glad I chased it up in the end rather than just shrugging my shoulders and cursing my stupidity.
