This is what I want to text back in response to my lovely friend whose baby is five days old and says he doesn't like his arms being restricted!!! My first just didn't sleep my second I swaddled from the get go after advice on here and the difference was sanity saving.
Am I being ott to be so evangelical about the swaddle? Spesh the velcro one I go on and on about. I just want to save others my misery- but then I think, well maybe the second was just a good sleeper anyway?

Mine hated being swaddled, only one of them though, I can't remember which one.

Some babies don't like it.

Also, I found the swing chairs an absolute God send but whilst I sang about them from the roof tops, not all babies would bliss out in one, I suspect.

Why is this in AIBU?

Baby 1 i swaddled and he was. 7-7 sleeper from around 9 weeks old.

Baby 2 all sensible information had fallen out of my head and it never occurred to me to swaddle Confused and we ended up bed sharing. He didnt sleep through til 16 months! He is still be sharing at 6 Hmm Grin

If there is a baby 3 it will be swaddled.

What's the AIBU?

Good lord swing chairs!! Not a chance. Terrible sleep associations, no? Surly, that's the spirit... For number 3 at any rate, what happened to number 2?!

My son screamed if the blanket was even loosely over his arms, I tried swaddling and he screamed until I freed him. It doesn't work for every baby.

I'm expecting #2, I'd heard of swaddling with DS but I think it scared me. This time, I'm already eyeing up swaddle pods (are they easier?) and it's posts like this that I like to see!

So swaddling is going to guarantee this one actually sleeps, right?

My DD had to be swaddled until around 8mo, we had to go cold turkey in the end because she was just breaking free if everything but still wanted it.

DS hated it and always escaped within minutes.

YABU to want to force what worked for you on others. It doesn't work for all.

Ahh, the one-time parent. We've all Ben there, thinking we knew what works when in fact you only know what worked with one particular child Wink

I thought I knew it all until we had our second. Ds1 loved being swaddled and it would calm him down instantly but ds2 hated being swaddled and would scream louder.

My number one used to wrestle his right arm free and hold it straight up against his head so he looked like superman Grin

I've had two!! That's the point!!! Number 1 , no swaddling no cc and no sleep till he was 2.5, number 2, swaddling all the way and slept like a dream from the day we got home. That's why I'm evangelical

Swaddle pod's are a doddle. Couldn't get the hang of swaddling and they worked for us, but only up to about 9 weeks. After that she didn't want to be Swaddled any more, but it was worth the money I think.

What is it you're asking? Whether to send an exasperated text to a 5 days postnatal woman?

I'm not sure what you're saying. Your friend 'claims' her baby doesn't like being swaddled and you don't believe her?

Why don't you try texting something supportive and kind? You can make suggestions but if she's told you they don't work for her then yes yabu to send exasperated !!!!!!-laden texts at her.

My second baby hated being swaddled and screamed until he was sick if you tried it.

YANBU, I swaddled both of mine but with their hands upwards and they both slept really well. My youngest is 20 weeks and is now in a grobag but the swaddle taught him how to sleep. Share the advice, I don't think there's any harm.

Trying to swaddle DD was like trying to wrestle a bear cub into a strait jacket. She was having none of it. Only couple of times we thought we'd cracked it she escaped after about three seconds like a tiny Houdini.

So yes, YABU. What works for you may not work for others.

First baby, swaddling saved my sanity.

Second one wasn't having any of it.

So yes. You are being entirely unreasonable Smile

I once swaddled ds in a swaddlers pod thing. He not only got out of it but managed to take his nappy off in the process and pissed all over the cot (I believe in defiance!)

My DD hated being swaddled. My nephew loved it. Babies are different. I'd suggest as something to try rather than pin it as a holy grail of sleep.

Mine slept while swaddled, but was a genius at bursting out of the swaddling and waking herself up. This would result in her screaming the house down at the injustice of having a mother so bloody crap at swaddling her.
Deep into one dark, sleepless night of breastfeeding and trying to get her to sleep I found myself eyeing a roll of parcel tape as I desperately tucked corners in... Reader, I did not succumb. I promise.

With my PFB a friend bought me a stretchy swaddle blanket and it was marvellous - used it every night until he outgrew it and panicked when it was in the wash! So when I was pregnant with DD I bought another one so I would have a spare, washed it in preparation and felt pleased I knew the magic trick of sleep. Of course she would never sleep in it for one moment and I'd taken it out of the box so couldn't even send it back or sell it as unused.

Neither of mine liked being swaddled and both slept through from 4 and 6 weeks old. Swaddling doesn't equal good sleeper.
