walking down a busy highstreet yesterday, bloke walking toward me gets his last fag out of the packet, crumples up said fag packet and chucks it on the floor. There is a bin less than 10ft away. I go up to him and ask why would he throw that on the floor when there is a bin right there? He looks shocked/confused and shrugs. I rant something about what the streets would be like if everyone did that and that he has no respect cringing at how old I sound pick up the fag packet, throw it in the bin and walk away.

Tell my mum about it later and she says I'm so stupid, that I should just mind my own business, that I'm going to end up on the news as one of those people that gets stabbed in the street over a disagreement. Was I UR to say something?

I got a total twat a cracker with something similar. He came out of our local shop, unwrapped his fags and dumped the cellophane and silver foil inches from the bin. He then got into his car, it was a sunny warm day and he had the sun roof open.

I leant into his open window with the discarded wrapping in my hand and said "you dropped this", he gave me a sneery look and told me to "fuck off" so I dropped the litter through his sunroof.

He nearly took a stroke with anger, I couldn't stop laughing. Selfish arse.

Your DM has a point but I salute you.

Let's face it, you'd have to be a real dick to risk being put away for life because of littering.

YNBU in criticizing him, but YWBU to put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. That's the job and responsibility of a litter enforcement officer, not you. You didn't know him. He could have been the type to smack you or something. There are such people out there.

I remember laughing at a similar thread where a pp had dropped someone's litter into their hoodie.

I laughed then because I have been guilty of doing the same.

Now I am not so sure as I have also dropped litter in through a sun roof.

And a half eaten burger into a handbag - well, she did drop it onto my flip flopped foot! And she didn't half screech loudly and rudely and longly!! Oh, and she carried the handbag on her forearm in that "look at the expensive handbag" manner! Maybe she was a 'somebody'.

I think I may have to stop myself, if you all think it could be dangerous!

There's more than a few lifers doing time because some unsuspecting individual had the temerity to 'dis' them.

You're to be admired, OP, but if you're out on your own don't confront anti-social twats on anything other than a busy highway otherwise you may come to harm.

Oh god I'm feeling a torn now. This wasn't a one off, I've done it about 4 times now. Most have ended like the above, one ended with me and a bloke having a slanging match after he dumped a months worth of trash from his car on the pavement outside my work. I dont want to turn a blind eye to people littering/other anti social behaviour, but perhaps it really isnt my place/responsibility to say something? But then I think if no one says anything then people think its fine to do. Maybe the guy from yesterday will think twice before littering again? one can dream . I feel like not saying anything and minding my own business is like giving up on my principles?

Good on you OP. Littering twats disgust me. I also am disgusted by litterers on the tube. One day I reckon they should just not clean the trains to show people the implications of their disgusting habits!

And I'm not sure why people are assuming litterers are all asbo types. Perfectly naice businessy people litter too

Grin at putting the rubbish in the hoodie and sun roof!

I yell at cyclists on the pavement and people who try to queue jump.

This rages me, its a train not a fucking bin. I have no idea why tube littering is 'ok'.

I think you were absolutely right and wish everybody would stand up for what they believe in more. The last time I was the town where I was born, it looked like it hasn't progressed since the 1978 Winter of Discontent because of lazy people who are incapable of using litter bins. There is no need for it at all.

I have done the McDonald rubbish in the sun roof.

I made sure the ice cream cup was laying down. It looked tired.

Dd has recently started 'window open please mummy' in the car.
"Why, dd?"
"Dd put rubbish out window."
"No. Where do we put rubbish?"
"In the BIN"

Not sure where this came from?

I just can't resist calling out people for this. Just the other day I followed a young couple up the stairs to the train station. He flicked his fag off the stairs, without looking - it bounced down and onto the long hair of a young woman underneath. Really dangerous, and I had to challenge. He didn't tell me to fuck off, so I guess he may have been a teeny bit contrite.

Once I challenged a really rough looking guy who flicked his cigarette behind him - it flew millimetres from my dd's face (she was a baby in a buggy). I have to say that if he hadn't looked so scary I would have flipped out at him, as it was I just told him. He puffed out his chest and considered his reaction. Obviously he wasn't going to actually say sorry, because that would be just too far from his usual response, but he said, "Well, I didn't know she was there!" I said, "Well, that's why you should look!" He looked at me, wanting to batter me but knowing that I was so far up the moral high ground even his arms probably couldn't reach; and I looked at him, wanting to push my advantage but actually scared I would get smacked by either him or his equally scary wife. And we both left it there.

Good for you. I hate litterers, but am too chicken to do what you do. My DH honks and gesticulates when he sees drivers chucking fag ends out of their windows, I love him for his ethics but do worry that he's going to get stabbed one day.
