To be frustrated with DS's sleep?

He's 14 months. He usually nurses himself to sleep at naptime, but if he doesn't for some reason, trying to put him to down awake is a bit of a nightmare. Today he chattered to himself for a few minutes, then when he realized that he couldn't get up and move around, he started screaming and screamed until he puked in less than 5 minutes.
I stay with him until he falls asleep, but in the past I've tried leaving him on his own and it hasn't made any difference. I'm not really sure what to do.
