To think it's okay to be offended!

Just that. Seems to me that people almost expect others to retract statements etc that 'offend' them. Lots of things offend me, but that's okay, i just choose to ignore it and move on. why is it that if you 'offend' a person these days it's almost borderline illegal. People demanding statements be retracted because they are offended ... Offends me!

I am not offended, will self refer to see what my problem is with lack of offence, and pop back.

Well it depends really. Did they mean to offend? Are we talking public statement from famous person? Are they making a statement that is clearly inflammatory like 'gay people should be shot' or are they saying something like 'my religious beliefs say I can't eat that cake you've made me.'

I think it's OK to be offended sometimes. I think we all offend people sometimes. I guess it is the intention of the person doing the offending that makes the difference.

Is this just a light hearted thread though? Am I over thinking it?!

Yes! Yes yes yes yes yes. OMG I think this all the time. You don't have to agree all the time and you don't have to change your opinion because someone else doesn't like it

Someone will always be offended by something. Most I can ignore, sometimes it can be something hugely ignorant and sensitive and that's not ok. But the latter is pretty rare tbh. Most of the time the professionally offended get offended by fuck all. They are free to jog on.

It's a fairly recent phenomena, this 'getting offended' malarkey.

People used to go around with their own silent thoughts, freely judging other people in their own heads, but no-one was any the wiser, and few people were offended.

Now, with the advent of the Internet, people actually say what they think! in public, without even bothering to temper it down and make it palatable.

Twitter, Facebook, discussions forums - they're all full of people anonymously, and freely, coming out with those thoughts which were previously left unspoken. We're not used to it.

Civilised society is but a thin veneer. The Internet will be the undoing of us.
