AIBU?

AIBU regarding celebrity children and nepotism?

Ive just read on the DM online that Gordon Ramsey's 13 year old daughter is getting her own cookery show again. Having seen said child on The One Show with her father earlier this year I thought she seemed obnoxious and bratty and can't imagine why anyone would want to watch anything hosted by her, but there you go I suppose it's what happens when you have a famous daddy (or mummy).

It's the same with the Beckham children getting all of these high profile modelling gigs. Are they particuarly good looking children? Not in my opinion, not ugly by any means but not expetional to look at either. Its just because of who they are.

It's all over the industry, celeb kids getting gigs because of eho their parents are. There are probably thousands of kids out there who are far more talented, able and more attractive but aren't gettting a look in because they don't have the connections.

It doesn't seem fair to me.

I think you are being rather nasty about a 13 year old girl that you have seen for a couple of minutes on TV.

I get the point you are making but I don't like the way you are making it.

Same true in all walks of life. Not sure why you pick out celebrities especially.

Yabu for being so obsessed with celebs that you know or care about this. If no one watches the show that the child presents she won't last long.

What would you like to be done to redress the "unfairness" that you think exists?

Of course its not fair. Life's not fair. Can't believe you haven't noticed yet.

It's the same in all industries. I'm a solicitor and many of my former colleagues have parents who are solicitors (& often partner at the actual firm).

Children of celebrities sell better because people are obsessed with celebrities. It's not nepotism, it's good business sense. Johnny from Harrow may be 10 times more photogenic than the Beckham kids, people are still going to buy more the products advertised by the Beckham kids.

Same with the Ramsey girl, how many people would watch a cookery show hosted by a 13 year old? But they would watch her show, if only out of curiosity, and advertisers are only interested in watching figures.

Telly, fashion, music, movies are businesses. Making money is the principal aim and for all their creativity and dare, they're actually hugely risk adverse.

Kids of famous people have a proven bankability. That's why they get the gigs.

Cross post Maxie!

She was quite rude and disrespectful towards her father on The One Show Chazs. Are we not allowed to comment when other people's kids are unpleasant now?

Gordon Ramsey has built a very successful TV career based on being obnoxious and bratty. His daughter seems like a pretty good bet for programme makers if she's following in his footsteps.

Profit comes before fairness every time. That's just how it works.

Is this a case of confirmation bias? What about DC of celebrities that don't get the gigs despite their connections - you don't hear about them because, er, you don't hear about them.

Rhine lots of 13 year olds are rude and disrespectful to their parents. Unless the rudeness and disrespect were directed at you, why would you care?

If you don't like seeing the children of celebs on TV don't watch them.

Don't worry, I won't!

If you were able to give your child opportunities that you never had wouldn't you do the same?

It's just life.

If you're the type to give the first fuck about celebrities its all your fault anyway. It plays to your demographic. Stop watching, stop buying, stop fuelling the industry.

i saw her on the one show, she seemed perfectly normal to me. not rude or anything

I can't get riled about it because if we had those opportunities available to us we would use them too.

And famous parents or not, if the show isn't good then it won't matter anyway.

I think the distinct lack of success (ultimately) in people with successful parents (in show business) has to be down to the fact they're not hungry for success and have had everything handed to them. The best thing they could do is change their name, keep quiet about their parentage and try to make it on their own.

It's on CBBC isn't it?

Of course it's unfair but life is unfair.
If you have connections to enable your dc to do something that others may not have the opportunity to do of course you go for it, who wouldn't.
After all they have to come up with the goods whoever they are.
They still have to make it on their own, learn from their own mistakes and walk the walk.

Well if having celebrity parents means child labour, they're welcome to it. Modelling is hard tedious work.

I doubt I'd watch a cookery show hosted by a 13 year old, even if her dad is Gordon Ramsey. I'm not really into cookery shows. I watch the Gordon Ramsey Shouts At People type shows though so if her show was like that I'd give it a go.

Actually I like the sound of that, a little blonde girl with piglets yelling at people 'THE SOUP IS DRY!' Can we get that show?

THE BEEF IS SO RAW IT'S EATING THE SALAD!

What surprises me about this is that it's on the BBC. When I was a kids (70s/80s) then you absolutely would have had random BBC shows presented by random kids - but maybe they had famous parents but I just didn't know it (off to google who Gordon the Gopher's parents are).

Yeeeesss. We know somebody who, because of his family connections, got an amazing, amazing book deal. His book was good, but ordinarily probably wouldn't have been published. Now, ten years on, his life is pretty tough because of that. His book, fairly obviously, did not make back the money the publishers had invested in it and is now known as an epic publishing fail, thus making it actually even harder for him to get published the second time around. He also had not been through the tough struggle most authors face in trying to get published, so has not developed the coping strategies necessary for survival in a tough, competitive profession. He will never live up to his parents' fame or success and really finds it hard to cope with this. Goes without saying he suffers a fair bit from depression.
