AIBU?

To spend so much on a hotel for dh's 40th next year?

Basically my MiL and FiL have agreed to have our three children next May whilst I take dh away for three days to the Lake District. I wanted to really treat him considering it's his birthday and we haven't had a night out I thisbjosie alone in over 4 h'years and we've had a really shit year. I found an absolutely stunning hotel in Ambleside, it has every mid con, ie jacuzzi, stunning decor, circular rotating bed (lol), whirlpool bath that lights up and has a docking station so that you can playing lovely romantic music, mood lighting throughout the suite and best of all a completely free cocktail bar and mini bar.

Now like I said I've splashed out and it has cost me £840 for the weekend. Now to us that is slashing out as we aren't well off, at all but I've got 8 months to save up for it and we only have to pay on arrival (already paid £200 deposit) so it is doable. But I told my sister about it and all I got was hostility and her quizzing me about "how on earth we would afford it" and why why would I want to spend so much! I can't help feel a bit peeved with her as she's knows it a special occasion and what's more, it's got nothing to do with we really has it? It's like she never wants us to be happy as one odd occasion we've had something nice come out way she's always had something negative to say, so Aibu to rather peeved?

Ask her what it has got to do with her and don't allow her to spoil it.

YANBU. She is jealous. How you spend your own money is completely up to you.

It sounds fabulous by the way Smile

It's costing me less to take DH and the DCs to Iceland for a week for his.

That said, I paid about £600 for a hotel in Windermere for his 30th. (Wonder if it's the same one.)

We did something v similar for a similar reason at a similar cost - it was lovely and your SiL is being a killjoy!

(In what way is a "rotating circular bed" a mod con?!)

Lol. Well she's no need to be jealous really, she's got tons of money do goes to far more exotic places than the Lake District, although she is a single parent so whether that's something to do with it I don't know? But to be fair she should just be happy for us shouldn't she? I mean we've gone years without a night away never mind three nights lol.

I put lol after the rotating circular bed, it isn't really a mod con at all but it's something new:)

We went on a 2 week cruise without the DC for our joint 40th, that cost more than £840

I can't see how it's any of her business, don't let it bother you. I went to New York for my 40th........having said that we couldn't all afford to go so I went with my oldest dd and my husband took out youngest dd to Spain to have a holiday in the sun. We were all happy, lots of people thought it was an odd thing to do but as long as it's right for your family that's all that matters Smile

YANBU. It's a special treat.

I actually live in Ambleside and know the hotel you mean, it's v nice.

That said, I once splashed out on a four star hotel in London to treat DP. It was nice, but I kind of wished I'd spent less when we got there as we didn't spend much time in it and actually the best memories I have is where we've just roughed it in hostels.

Sounds perfect to me. Enjoy. xx

P.s. Just ignore anyone who tries to take the shine off it for you, they are just jealous of what you have, poor things.

Lol it's called the Langdale Hotel. The suites we are staying in are currently still being built so no pictures are available only plans and details of want the suite includes . They are adding a massive extension onto the hotel and adding some luxury suites, booking was already open when I looked so I thought I'd jump in and get it reserved.

We have three kids, one with suspected additional needs so going to New York or on a cruise is out of the question although me and dh funnily enough were about to book New York for my 30th birthday September 2010 but I found out i was pregnant with ds in the August and ended up being hospitalised so that went out of the window:( lol.

Lol thank you. It's ages off but I absolutely cannot wait. Me and dh are like passing ships at home, he's always working and when he's not we are trying to cope with our ds's meltdowns and try and keep life stable and enjoyable for our oldest two children so these last few years we've kind of forgotten about us x
