To just take carry on for a 10 day holiday - it's too bloody expensive for suitcase!

Over Xmas. Myself, dd and dp. We normally take two suitcases and carry on.

It's so bloody expensive for suitcases - £40 each way per suitcase!

How do I squeeze that in to a 10 kg hold all each ??

Any suggestions please Smile

We are currently on holiday. We took one hold suitcase and two small hold cases (one of which is a trunki) for our family of four - me and dh, dd(6) and ds(1- still in nappies). This has been fine and included the nappies, swim nappies etc.

Sorry - should read two small cabin cases.

Are you going somewhere hot or cold?

I'm going to for sixteen days. I started a thread about it last week. I've paid for hold baggage on the way back and will buy a cheap case for the inevitable amount of crap we pick up along the way.

Of course it's really not hard to do any holiday ( ok maybe not a " posh dressing for dinner" cruise ) with 10kg luggage.

You will have to wash pants / socks probably in the sink and buy all toiletries etc either at the destination or at the airport and discard the remains- but choice shower gel / shampoo you will both use and waste is minimal - and. As you save £25 or so AND the time checking in / waiting for bags ( and the stress of loss/ theft/ breakages) it's a liberating winner.

I usually over pack and have to pay excess luggage but this year I took 3 hand luggage (10kg each) and one hold (15kg) for a 16 day hol for 2 adults and 2 children. I was surprised how much we could get into the hold suitcases, only reason we had hold luggage was we needed to take medication over 100ml or we would have been fine with all hold luggage.

We're going on holiday for a week next year. 4 of us - me, dp, dd and dd's friend.
We've paid for 1 piece of hold baggage for me and will put everybody's toiletries and anything particularly heavy in my rucksack. The other 3 will have hand luggage only.

That seemed a good compromise.

We got a total of 80kg "free2 last year for four of us and didn't use a 3rd of it. It bothered me. I couldn't think what else I was supposed to pack.

What type of holiday?
Do you have access to a washing machine?

10kg is quite generous for cabin baggage - it's often only 6kg. Are you sure of that figure? If you are, for a hot place, that is plenty. I rarely go over 12 including all toiletries.

There's a good link on how to get loads in a carry on. Will try to find.

I love taking hold luggage - being able to swan through departures with a handbag is bliss.

A family member takes just hand luggage but I always check in 40kg of hold luggage.

I can't understand how you get it in to one case, especially factoring in beach towels for each person? My toiletries weigh loads as can't trust the local supermarkets to have conditioner good enough to deal with my chlorine/sand ruined hair.

Just check in a bag OP!

How old is your dd? I think its doable as long as you maximize the hand luggage allocation. We did a week in France with a 7 month old using hand luggage only and it was tight but we managed it. We had a small case and a small bag each (we got bags and cases off eBay in the maximum size to get the most space) and baby allowance, but if your dd has her own seat then she should get her own hand luggage allowance. The only pain is the liquids allowance, but 10 x 100ml is quite reasonable if you share shampoo, showergel etc. Not sure how you'd manage Xmas gifts though, I'd maybe leave those at home.

We just do carry on, 2 adults & 2 children, sun holidays.
BUT we have an apartment with a washing machine which I run every evening when we go out for a meal. Hang out when we get back and it's dry by the morning.

For the kids I take 2/3/4 pairs of shorts (less as they get older as they don't spill stuff all the time), 4 t shirts, few sets of undies, pjs, couple of swimmers. They wear sandals and I don't bother with other footwear.
They have 1 carry in between them which includes their beach towels.

For me I had 2 pairs of shorts, 3 sun dresses, 4 or 5 tshirts, few bikinis, couple of wraps, few pairs of pants.
I have 1 carry on with both mine and DP's beach towels, plus other random bits.

DP has to be persuaded not to take 2 jumpers and 3 pairs of long trousers (we are going to southern Spain in July you DO NOT need a jumper).
He more than fills his carry on then has to cut down on what he takes.
To be fair his clothes are buggers than mine, but he still takes too much.

I also take goggles, flippers, cards, books, gadgets galore (I think this year we had 14 including cameras which is ridiculous) plus chargers, beach bag, smaller cooler bag and a few other bits.

We take some toiletries

We also had a couple of v small dag packs, mine with passports, my purse, etc and kids with their bits and pieces for the flight.

Just buy toiletries at Boots, after you've gone through security.
