AIBU?

To think the gym are being ridiculous and treating customers like children?

They have recently introduced a rule stating that you must be in the building 15 minutes before any class starts.

Anyone who doesn't arrive 15 minutes before is being given a 'strike'. 3 strikes and you aren't allowed to book any more classes online.

I am really pissed off.

Is it because the classes are full and people aren't turning up?

Eh? Are you all 11 years old? Did teacher spit his dummy out?
Take your gym custom elsewhere if your membership allows.

It's the 15 minutes before thing that is most annoying though. They're counting you as not turning up even though you can be there on time!

15 minutes! That's a really long to wait around for a class. Complain. I understand if people keep turning up late or keep missing the class so strike them when and if that happens not before

It is annoying if you just like to go to the gym for classes!

Yes, they should just say you can't book again after the three strikes. I can't get anywhere 15 minutes early!

Report
crustsaway · 06/08/2015 19:00

Yes, this is purely because people arent turning up and the class is a busy one.
15 minutes is no time at all in the whole scheme of things is it.

Oh, and if they are turning up, theyre either late so disrupting the class or dithering.

Think about it the other way round.

YABU. I bet they've introduced this because people are arriving late and disturbing classes.

Report
HaPPy8 · 06/08/2015 19:05

I guess its 15 minutes though so that people that are in the building can book a place if there looks to be non attenders.

5 mins would be adequate, surely?

Report
AuntieStella · 06/08/2015 19:09

It's in the building, not ready to start. They've allowed what they think is adequate time to change, stow belongings and be ready.

Yes, some people might whizz in ready to begin. But the problem which has led to this ruling probably doesn't lie with them.

I have never seen anyone run in late to any classes.

YY, if you're trying to juggle childcare (or even traffic!) 15 minutes is so annoying.

My gym charges you for missing classes, so they may as well do that. £10 per missed class.

It's been done for a good reason OP. Why not ask?

This is a load of bollocks. I have a "the gym" in my work building, I let my membership go because of nonsense like this. If I was to go to a class I would literally leave my desk 10 minutes before the class, change in office (much nicer shower room thsn gym) and go down the lift to walk in to the class bang on start time. I do a yoga class now. She doesn't care if I'm 1 min late.
Go somewhere else. It's like easyJet for gyms.

I will, just saw a poster this morning and was quite put out.

I don't even know how you get yourself out of the red zone and able to rebook.

YANBU, they would be better off having a booking system and people who don't turn up for booked classes should be penalised.

A similar thing has happened to me today. I have been suspended from classes for 5 days for missing 3 classes in 2 weeks!!! 2 were on the same day, I tried to cancel and the website wouldn't let me go into the timetable- it kept saying 'oops'. Well, 'oops' I can't go to classes for 5 days now.

The other one I just forgot to cancel, which I know is wrong. They didn't even warn me, just suspended me. I think they should at least tell you you will be suspended if you miss another class.

I think I will have to go and beg and plead tomorrow. I feel like a naughty child though!

Rather than being shitty about it, why not ask why they have introduced.

There is likely a reason for it. You may even understand if you ask.

It's most likely to be down to people booking on classes and not turning up. so other people are turned away from the class even though there are spaces, because people don't show up. This way 15 mins before the class they can admit more people and feel the spaces.

Your classes may be ok, but it doesn't mean people aren't late in any classes.

Maybe it's a case of if the members stopped acting like children, then the gym wouldn't have to have these rules

Saying 15 minutes may be a little excessive unless they assume you all change in the gym. The principle of only giving classes to good timekeepers is to be applauded.

Something similar at my former gym. Slightly late for a class and the doors are barred. "in case you injure yourself without a warm up". As if. I changed gyms. I am perfectly capable of warming up myself, particularly if I'm running late getting from work to a class that starts at 5.20pm.

Report
GloriaPritchett · 06/08/2015 21:36

The principle is alright, but I really feel 15 minutes is excessive. All classes start with a warm up and they should really trust customers paying a lot of money a month to know how long they take to get changed.
