To put you in the picture, I've had period problems since I was thirteen or so. Have had frequent scans, know all the gynaecology staff very well etc. I had a coil fitted in 2013 as they suspected I might have endometriosis and thought this would be the best treatment.
I've had abdominal pain for the last three weeks, severe cramping that would wake me up overnight with some bleeding, suspected it was just a uti. I was treated at out of hours, given antibiotics which made a bit of a difference for 48 hours or so.
Pain came back, if not worse, leaving me doubled up at work and keeping me up most nights. I took painkillers as necessary, and tried to keep going. I've managed to work through it as much as possible. Work don't like you having sick days off and due to long term illness (this really) I'm getting more stringent monitoring than most.
Last night, I was so sore I ended up on all fours screaming with it, projectile vomiting and got taken to local casualty. Realised I am having vaginal bleeding again. They have given me new prescriptions for much stronger painkillers but recommended I get an emergency scan asap as they suspect my coil might not be where it should be, or there might be a pelvic infection.
I didn't get to leave the hospital until 1am last night, and woke up still sore and shaky. I've got a fever and can't really eat for feeling sick.
Gynaecology have phoned, booked me in for an emergency transvaginal scan on Friday. I have post traumatic issues around gynae exams so have been told I'll get a long appointment with the support of possibly 2 doctors and a nurse.
I'm meant to be doing 3 12 hour night shifts, this week. There's no way I can go in tonight at all. I rang my work, let them know and asked if my boss could phone me so I could explain that I am actually unwell and not just mucking about. Never heard anything so I rang her office - she told me she's in a meeting, won't be talking to me today but will do tomorrow when I return to work.
Thing is, I can't say whether I am returning to work at all tomorrow, I'm going to be working 12 hours, sleeping for 3, getting up and showered, going for a scan, going home and sleeping for another 3 and then working another 12 hours?! Surely the more sensible thing would be to not do Thursday night either.
Not to mention the fact I feel drugged to the bloody eyeballs and can't stand straight.
I've spoken to HR who have said that as this is a long term condition, of which they and occupational health are aware, they can't do very much and can't penalise me for it, but that the final decision rests with my manager (who certainly doesn't sound happy with me).
Should have I just gone to work and carried on? I don't know if I've made the right decision in staying off at all and am not sure what to do.
