to wonder where the Scottish exam results posts are?

Have I missed them in my searches?

My son has failed modern studies N5 in style - predicted an A received no award what so ever, not even an N4. He felt the exam went well.

School is closed to all enquiries apart from students who have failed to get uni requirements.

Would love to 'talk'...

Yay! Thanks Squeezy, couldn't remember the name of the Scottish bit, was searching for Scotmums etc

I don't think you get an automatic N4 though? That's up to the school based on coursework. You wouldn't get it the results from SQA letter.

Hi. Dbro (living with me) got his higher results - A, D and no award. Possibly going to contest the D as he was predicted a B, got a C in his prelim and has been getting Bs for all his coursework. Not surprised with the no award though

Sounds as if something has gone very wrong with your DS' Modern Studies paper. I'd be appealing that and asking for it back to see what's happened

There's a poster on Scotsnet whose son was exactly the same- predicted A, no award.

I can't believe the 33% pass mark for maths. We need a regulator for the exam system.

OK I thought that they had already basically gained a N4 before doing the N5.

N4 units are listed on his Summary of Attainment for subjects he passed N5s in. The 3 MS units listed are at N5 level. I really don't understand!

I definitely want to try to get it reviewed, his school has always insisted there are now no appeals though I'm learning this isn't the case.

I know the head line figure is better than ever results but in my circle everyone's done worse than expected to lesser and greater degrees. (nearly all Nat5s).

I felt so sorry for the maths candidates, hope dropping the bands made it all fairer, agree with the need for a regulator.

Think you have to be entered for Nat 4 as well as Nat 5 in order to get awarded Nat 4 if you fail Nat5 - not simply have done relevant coursework. ds was presented for both in a couple of subjects - and had to do additional coursework as well.

Schools can enter pupils for N4 as well as N5 so pupils can gain a compensatory N4 if they fail N5. This is very unlikely to have been done for a pupil predicted A though. It can be done afterwards so your child might still get N4. It's not the case that a N5 pupil will definitely have done N4 'on the way' though. Finally, there are no appeals anymore but you can request a remark. This means the grade could go up or down.

Yes the coursework will have slightly different requirements, but generally a N5 unit pass counts for N4 as well, and the added value bit (whatever it is for that subject) needs to be done too at N4 level. If the school has this work they can then submit a N4 pass to SQA.
The certificate mentions N5 units as your ds has passed those (and they aren't taken away by failing the exam!)
You need to check with the school but my understanding is: there are no appeals any more in the former sense where prelims could boost your grade. But you can get a paper either recounted or remarked (If there is a good reason to do so).

Thanks for the responses (especially iggi here and the other thread) , is there a deadline to request a remark? We at least have nothing to lose if mark goes down

School wants nothing to do with our situation till start of term. Would like to at least know if he can continue his higher course it's really all unsettling and frustrating.

There will be a deadline but not before the schools are back at least. Is the class very oversubscribed? Does the teacher "rate" his work in general? I would really assume he will be allowed to continue. You have a lot of influence as parents as well in getting him a "trial" of the course at least. Try not to worry.

You'll need to check with your council for their remarking policy. Some won't allow them any more, some only allow them if there is a big discrepancy.

Apparently most of the remarking requests are now coming from private schools. My friend offered to pay for her DS' and was refused.

I've no idea about the number of students wanting to do H Modern Studies, I doubt its very high though. His teachers have always spoken very highly of him personally and academically and were delighted when he chose to do H MS and History.

I spoke to an old friend yesterday who is a HoD at a prominent private Edinburgh school yesterday. Interestingly she said they have been told by the rector to not put forward anybody for reviews nor to encourage parents to do it. Parents are however able to do it themselves for a fee starting at £30 for adding up marks again getting increasing for remarking. SQA have made it clear they want minimal reviews taking place.

I would love to understand the thinking behind the coursework that DS had submitted. He said they did an investigation then had to do a self assessment on it and it was that that was submitted. In my eyes actually very little to with MS and more "exam" technique or English. Actually I'm amazed looking at the revision books he has how much emphasis is put on outcomes and answering in the correct way. Knowledge seems secondary.

His core skills btw are rated at 5 for numeracy and 6 for all others so his communication shouldn't have been the problem.

nolassie Scottish teacher here although a different subject. In social studies subjects there is s big emphasis on skills - looking at sources and analysing them. Knowledge based questions are there but they are really learning skills. To be predicted an A and get no award is odd in my opinion and as someone else said you have a lot of sway as a parent and I would push for a remark (I know sqa are discouraging this but the difference in his predicted and actual grades is odd and even as his teacher I would want to see the actual paper). Do they have to answer from certain sections? It's possible he's panicked and answered the wrong questions. On the N4 they can still put him forward if he's done the added value unit - can't remember the deadline but may be still time to get it done and get N4 at least.
