AIBU?

To ask for a woop woop on the day I got my first buggy shaming?

I've waited so long for this day to arrive - my kids are really growing up! I was picking blackberries with my 3y3m old twins in a quiet pedestrianised lane near our house and a woman cycled past us, stopped, looked back, shook her head, said "those children are too old to need a buggy" and cycled off.

Dear cycling lady, I've no doubt that at 3 and a bit your wonderful children were doing 6 mile hikes through the Schwarzwald (we live at the Swiss/German border), but I also suspect that if they were tired you gave them the odd sneaky carry. Which I cannot do with 2 15kg kids, not at the same time. Also, when we are waiting for the tram it really helps to only have to keep my eye on one stationary object instead of two that move randomly in different directions.

Anyway, it's cool, it's just funny. Loads of people on here have posted about getting judged when they went out with a buggy and a tall two year old and I was like Hmm. I get it now!

not only in different diretions, in the completely opposite direction to the two most dangerous things in the environment you are currently in.

Or the old "one burst out crying inconsolably, the other one make a beeline for something dangerous" manouvre - I admire the style of that one I must say.

Ah I know of someone whose 5 year old was in a buggy, but she actually had a really serious heartcondition which meant she couldn't get out of breath.

I am planning on using my pushchair until my child is at least 12. I do not like to carry things and I like to get where I am going in less than 5 hours of walking.

My daughter went in a buggy if we were walking somewhere of a reasonable distance until she was at least 4 and in the supermarket trolley until she got stuck and, funnily enough, now she's 11.5 she doesn't ask to be carried, and even manages to drag her weakened stumps around the house and to school every single day. She also slept in my bed every night, and funnily enough, she doesn't do that any more either.....

Also people are much less likely to use a buggy if they are going mostly in and out of a car! I don't drive so imagine I'll be using a buggy for ds when he's 3+ as whilst he's a good walker, we often walk 5+ miles home as buses so infrequent and can't imagine him doing that easily.

I'm waiting for mine .. My son is 4 and has a genetic condition which means he has delayed development . He looks 'normal ' though.. He can walk but not far and at the moment he is still in a normal buggy because I don't want a massive special needs one ... I will probably release the last 4 years of stress and tribulations on them and they will seriously regret judging me !

Blackberries already?

We used a buggy right up until ds was 4. I did't drive and it was handy for the shopping.

Don't get why people do this, or think it's OK to do this. Not your child? Then not your business! It's really thoughtless to say things like that, what if an older child is unable to walk, or to walk safely. One word: twats.

Can you all come and post on my thread in parenting? I was starting to feel like a lazy Mum for still using a buggy with DS 2.4!

Only two children? You're a mere amateur, OP. I had a wonderful experience on a seaside holiday many years ago. As soon as we touched foot on the beach one child rushed towards the sea, second rushed towards the rocks and started to climb, third started one way down the beach and dog started the opposite way. (We hadn't had DC4 at that point.) It was only after I'd rounded them all up (two shouts, two sprints) that I realised their dad was strolling along comfortably ignoring the lot. Words were spoken. Angry

There are blackberries in my garden as well (Kent). There shouldn't be, mind you Blush

Ah not you, Diazepam, the other (sweary) one.

The blackberries really are out here though! It's usually warmer than the UK here but this year we've had nearly a month of super-hot weather (38 degrees, 4 days in a row once - murder).

Annie that's the charm with twins. They might be both mobile and idiots at exactly the same age, but at least you can always grab one under your arm and then run after the other...

bishboschone if it ever happens, give me a shout and I'll come and hold them down while you give them a kicking. Thing about having twins is that it gives you a teeny tiny insight into what it's like to be differently abled or to have a differently abled child. Being expected to function in a world that is just not in any way designed to work for you. Total hat tip to you.

I have a very tall 3 year old who still creeps into the buggy. I enjoy the critical looks from passers by. She looks nearly 5 ????

Some people can be so judgemental its pathetic. I sometimes use the buddy for my 3 year old and I don't see a problem with it. I don't drive so when I do the grocery shop I tend to use the buggy so that I can stick the bags onto the handles as I simply cannot carry mutliple bags and my child as its a bus ride and quite a walk to get home and by that time my child is tired and its easier for her to be in the buggy and it cuts the journey almost in have. Also If we go for long days out such as zoos museums or the shopping centre I will stick her in a buggy for safety basically, places like this always tend to be crowded and I know she's safe in her buggy and im more comfortable that way.but if its less crowded she will be out of her buggy she is good at walking long distances.
