To ask where I can send my 57p?

According to the Mirror if all the asylum seekers currently in Calais came into the UK and (highly unlikely) never paid any tax, it would cost each of us 57p.
To save a group of people from some of the most unimaginable horrors in their home countries, I'm more than happy to pay that.
So, where do I sign to pay up (and make it clear I'm happy for them to officially seek asylum and have their claims verified)?

Another one happy to pay.

TheRealMaryMillington Fri 31-Jul-15 20:49:26

Me too.

Welshmaenad Fri 31-Jul-15 20:50:48

Hell, I'll send them a quid, they can put some in a contingency fund.

Hellotherehowareyoudoing Fri 31-Jul-15 20:51:02

I'm right there with you. Seems all too easy for some people to forget that these are people too.

drspouse Fri 31-Jul-15 20:51:03

So where do you reckon? Refugee Council? It would look a bit odd to give them that little but maybe if we all explained why?

drspouse Fri 31-Jul-15 20:52:02

Hmm or maybe give them £10.57 or £5.57 or something?

I'd donate too, happily. Remember that this is MN though and lots of posters genuinely don't have 57p spare so expect to have that pointed out at length.

silverglitterpisser Fri 31-Jul-15 20:54:03

I'm another more than happy to pay. If only life was so black n white eh.

Did you see the pictures on the BBC 6pm news? - broke my heart to see a man trying to climb over the port fence with a small child, Lord knows what that little one has been through to get as far as Calais. Very disturbing. Very wrong.

longfingernails Fri 31-Jul-15 20:58:24

They must be so oppressed in France.

drspouse Fri 31-Jul-15 20:59:18

rocky if it's per taxpayer then lots of those who can't afford it would not be counted anyway.

I'm donating £X + 57p and saying why.

swallowed Fri 31-Jul-15 20:59:42

I've got 57p.

If someone is short of 57p I'm happy to put some extra 57ps in smile

longfingernails Fri 31-Jul-15 21:01:14

I would rather direct any charity towards the hauliers and lorry drivers who have had their livelihoods ruined.

swallowed Fri 31-Jul-15 21:02:41

You're free to do that long.

I'll put in 57p for you smile

Hellotherehowareyoudoing Fri 31-Jul-15 21:03:41

I like your style swallowed

SanityClause Fri 31-Jul-15 21:05:26

I'm happy to give my 57p, too. Just let me know where to send it.

drspouse Fri 31-Jul-15 21:06:46

Well, you could JUST send 57p to the Refugee Council?

RiceBurner Fri 31-Jul-15 21:06:48

But what if we let them in, and the same number, (of sad people with children), want to follow in their footsteps very soon? Are you willing to pay double ... or will you just tell the next lot they can't come in?

And if you let the 2nd lot in, what about the 3rd/4th lot? (You can see where I am going with this I think?)

So it's not just 57p per person. And not everyone can or wants to pay.

So YABU to think that everyone would pay and that it would only cost you 57p to solve the whole Calais problem. (Much more complex than that!)

It's very sad, but what's wrong with them staying in France? We can't all move to Australia just cos we want to? And France is not bad if you just want safety/asylum?

longfingernails Fri 31-Jul-15 21:06:51

How exactly is your 57p going to get an illegal into the country? Do you really think Theresa May is going to say, oh good, the Islington set on MN are virtue signalling en masse, therefore I must let all the illegals in?

Feel free to waste your money, and any feelings of smug superiority that go along with it.

SanityClause Fri 31-Jul-15 21:07:08

I'll put in an extra 57p for an MNer without 57p to spare, too.

ThoseAwfulCurtains Fri 31-Jul-15 21:07:13

Yup. Let me know where to send it and you can have 57p from every taxpayer in this house.

drspouse Fri 31-Jul-15 21:07:29

stareatthetvscreen Fri 31-Jul-15 21:09:00

Maybe someone should do a kickstarter. Thanks for starting this thread which somehow restores my faith in humanity after all the horrid other threads
