R4 this morning. Two women pronouncing it to rhyme with hole. I pronounce it to rhyme with towel.

Have I been saying it wrong all my life.

Come to think of it, I probably haven't said it that many times in my life.

It rhymes with towel. If it rhymes with hole it loves under a bridge.

Perhaps they were talking about somethign else. One of them did refer to sniffing her trowel before collecting them.......

People who wilfully mispronounce words really irritate me. They must think it makes them interesting or distinguished. My mum is the master of it.

Oh, they were collecting something. So probably not trowels as in hand tools. I wonder what it could have been Smile

The lady who was being interviewed had asperger's, and collecting trowels was part of her displayed behaviour.

I am now intrigued.

I once went out with a bloke who mispronounced penguins.

He didn't last long. Twat.

It rhymes with towel. If it rhymes with hole it lives under a bridge.

My local carpet fitters were laying the lino in my kitchen. It needed a layer of self-levelling stuff, as it was a large space with marks on the floor where the previous kitchen units had been.

They stood there looking at their handiwork and telling me in their broad local accents (and I have lived here 30 years so should know by now) that the "Troll marks" would show through... blah blah blah. And I smiled and nodded and thought "WTF????", whilst trying not to imagine these little creatures walking over my kitchen floor.

It took two days for the light to dawn Blush

Collecting trolls, the little doll ones? Is that what they meant?

Report
WitchofScots · 28/07/2015 10:56

Trowel is pronounced like bowel. Hopefully that is the closest a trowel and bowel will ever get....

MythicalKings · 28/07/2015 10:57

I sort of drop the "e" - Trowl

Discogeek · 28/07/2015 10:57

So we are back to the age old MN argument of how you pronounce

It makes more sense now.

I still say troll rhymes with doll.
