R4 this morning. Two women pronouncing it to rhyme with hole. I pronounce it to rhyme with towel.

Have I been saying it wrong all my life.

Come to think of it, I probably haven't said it that many times in my life.

Rhymes with towel

User100 Tue 28-Jul-15 10:41:52

It rhymes with towel. If it rhymes with hole it loves under a bridge.

User100 Tue 28-Jul-15 10:42:12

*lives not loves

Pointlessfan Tue 28-Jul-15 10:43:09

It definitely rhymes with towel!

ShatnersBassoon Tue 28-Jul-15 10:43:17

Like towel, vowel and bowel.

ExitPursuedByABear Tue 28-Jul-15 10:44:15

Perhaps they were talking about somethign else. One of them did refer to sniffing her trowel before collecting them.......

ShatnersBassoon Tue 28-Jul-15 10:44:29

People who wilfully mispronounce words really irritate me. They must think it makes them interesting or distinguished. My mum is the master of it.

ShatnersBassoon Tue 28-Jul-15 10:45:34

Oh, they were collecting something. So probably not trowels as in hand tools. I wonder what it could have been smile

ExitPursuedByABear Tue 28-Jul-15 10:48:19

The lady who was being interviewed had asperger's, and collecting trowels was part of her displayed behaviour.

I am now intrigued.

I once went out with a bloke who mispronounced penguins.

He didn't last long. Twat.

TheRealAmyLee Tue 28-Jul-15 10:50:16

It rhymes with towel. If it rhymes with hole it lives under a bridge.

This ^^

DinoSnores Tue 28-Jul-15 10:51:08

Did you used to go out with Benedict Cumberbatch?!

DayLillie Tue 28-Jul-15 10:52:46

My local carpet fitters were laying the lino in my kitchen. It needed a layer of self-levelling stuff, as it was a large space with marks on the floor where the previous kitchen units had been.

They stood there looking at their handiwork and telling me in their broad local accents (and I have lived here 30 years so should know by now) that the "Troll marks" would show through... blah blah blah. And I smiled and nodded and thought "WTF????", whilst trying not to imagine these little creatures walking over my kitchen floor.

It took two days for the light to dawn blush

FruSirkaOla Tue 28-Jul-15 10:53:31

Pengwing??? grin

ExitPursuedByABear Tue 28-Jul-15 10:54:23

I wish!

Much to young for me and good looking

ExitPursuedByABear Tue 28-Jul-15 10:54:58

No, it was sort of pengwens.

Limer Tue 28-Jul-15 10:56:14

Collecting trolls, the little doll ones? Is that what they meant?

WitchofScots Tue 28-Jul-15 10:56:56

Trowel is pronounced like bowel. Hopefully that is the closest a trowel and bowel will ever get....

MythicalKings Tue 28-Jul-15 10:57:58

I sort of drop the "e" - Trowl

Discogeek Tue 28-Jul-15 10:57:59

I thought they were on about collecting trolls, the little figures with the crazy hair?

I don't think she collected trowels!!

WitchofScots Tue 28-Jul-15 10:59:39

Penguin is pronounced Pengwin? Or am I wrong.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding Tue 28-Jul-15 11:00:11

Phonics sound is ow like cow.

avocadotoast Tue 28-Jul-15 11:00:25

Collecting trolls would definitely make more sense!

BitOutOfPractice Tue 28-Jul-15 11:02:13

I assume she collects things. Not trowels!

ExitPursuedByABear Tue 28-Jul-15 11:02:25

So we are back to the age old MN argument of how you pronounce

It makes more sense now.

I still say troll rhymes with doll.
