I'm a lone parent and barely have any photos of DS and I together. It's just not physically possible when there are only two of you and one of you is only three years old.

I think selfies are awful. The stupid expressions, the staged ones. I have no desire to look at anyone's nor have one of myself.

I think ones with own children/some event or place in/group of friends etc could be ok, but just a picture of oneself? No.

I think you are confusing narcissism with vanity. Vanity can be done with humour, narcissism often has other associated more unpleasant traits such as selfishness and lack of empathy.

I'd find a certain pattern of behaviour much more harmful than something like a selfie stick. Some people just like to take photographs with themselves e.g. as a way of keeping tabs on their weight, or as a sentimental record of certain things.

I can see their use, my kids love looking at pictures with them and me in them. It's frequently just me and the kids if we go out for the day, I have very few photos of me and my sister with my mum, she was taking them.

I was in Cambridge on Thursday and I saw a tourist use a selfie stick to take a picture of him eating a hot dog, with a bottle of coke sticking out of his pocket. He was facing a nice college (not in the photo, obvs) so his background was of a cruddy 60s building.

Weird.

Is it a selfie if you are taking it for your own personal use. Whose to say every picture taken is going to get slapped on social media. I have thousands of pictures of my family and my girls and my dogs. Just because I happen to be outside a pub or whatever doesn't mean it's for anyone else's enjoyment but mine. I need I selfie stick. I have short fat arms.

Selfie sticks are nit narcissistic, but there is something slightly cringy about them. The thing is though, they can take a really good picture and they mean no one has to be left out of the photo. Like them or loate them, they serve a valid purpose, even if they can be a pain in the arse in public places.
